Introduction.
Advent: Magicka Rising (later referred to as just Advent) is in essence Pokemon with swords, magic and the ability to beat monsters into a bloody pulp, should they prove to be disobedient.
For a long time (since I was around eight) the idea of running around with a team of monsters that answer to your beck and call was one that appealed to me greatly, as it would to any little boy, and Pokemon gave me just that. When I began becoming interested in pen and papers rpgs the desire to convert the Pokemon game into such a thing arose within me and now, after five years, I am actually starting to put pen to paper (of finger to key, as it were.)
Of course the happy-go-lucky gameplay style of Pokemon seemed a little too shallow and far too light hearted for anything I would want to play. So Advent game along, pokemon's evil twin.
All you need to play Lotsamon is this manual (though others may help as only 12 monsters are included in this book) some pens and paper, friends and a set of polyhedral dice (D4,D6,D8,D10,D12 & D20).
Setting
Pokethulu was one source from which I drew inspiration but I wanted to develop the idea and make it more sensible and perhaps dark. Pokethulu was meant as light hearted fun whilst I wanted to make a game that can support I long lasting story with more driving forces than mere comedy.
as for how monsters are kept it will depend on the characters skill that he uses. This will be expanded in the monster/skill chapter.
For Intimidation the monster will be more like a quelled dog, afraid of its master and wishes to run but the constant presence of the master and his wrath stops him from doing so.
Using charm the monster will be kept more as a pet. The monster and the master will develop a relationship of trust and loyalty.
Both of these skills have their ups and downs as monsters will have loyalty stats and such. Intimidate, for example, will gain loyalty much faster than charm, but will never be able to reach the higher levels.

Waiting for a setting
A little while ago I was able to read through a copy of "Cute and Fuzzy Cockfighting Seizure Minsters" - the -mon supplement for BESM. You really should find a copy of this (also available in a more child friendly version that omits "cockfighting" from the title - all other elements are the same)as it has some interesting ideas about how to realistically deal with a civilization that has access to small yet dangerous creatures like these.
I would also check out the free download of the game Pokethulu from Cumberland Games.
So, what do you have in store for us story wise? Are these actually animals kept in cages/balls/tomes/microchips etc. or is it more of a summons like a standard wizard? If you haven't decided yet, think about this suggestion:
The magic is a bit like Voudun, with a belief in channeling spirits and rituals. Warriors can collect parts from fallen creatures they have slain and distill them to get an essence. Then they can use these charms to infuse loa / shades into other creatures to grant them powers of the fallen. So you can't just let the monster do all the fighting, since you need to personally conquer a beast to be able to enchant another. Attempting to do any of this to a sentient individual creates zombies instead - which is why people make super powered rabbits, rather than enchanted fighters.
You have an excellent start here, keep at it!
There is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I seem to have lost sight of it some time ago.
