Alright, The Forge is gay

Ridiculously overbearing posting rules, administrators' manipulation of my threads, the inability to edit my posts, and whiny nerds who love to criticize but can't handle it themselves makes for a terrible experience.

I wish this site was more active because it's the most user-friendly format I've seen so far.

Can anyone else provide alternative sites where I can share my ideas without furfags and teh interweb police?

In retrospect

What really ticked me off was when there was, in my opinion, a legitimate argument going on about "GNS theory". One guy was opposed to it, and handled himself quite well, but the site admin, who happened to create GNS theory, said the guy was trolling and closed the thread.

As a veteran troll, I know it when I see it, but I think the admin was just, as we say in trollspeak,"butthurt".

The Forge can be a valuable tool

Yes, there are idiots on the Forge.

Yes, there are some strange forum rules (such as the lack of post editing)...but these have all been put in place for a reason.

I've been active on the Forge for over 2 years now and have tried to help people out when I can. Sometimes that help is respected, sometimes it's ignored, sometimes it's ridiculed.

Hell, you get that anywhere.

I do know of a few particularly bad examples on the Forge (people who fit the whiny nerd stereotype), if you can ignore them and get through to the really useful people, it's a valuable resource. It all depends if you think that time is worth your effort.

Story-Games can be just as bad but for different reasons.

As for other good forums, I'm thinking of starting up some purely game design oriented forums of my own...I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Let us know when that happens.

I'd be interested in joining a forum like that. On a side note, I also checked out your articles on the game-design subject and thought they were cool.

Off the top of my head?

Not much comes to mind. I spend all my time here, or on the 1km1kt forums.

Oh wait. There is Story Games. I've never posted there, but I have read some interesting threads there.

If you don't get many responses here, try asking on the 1km1kt forums. That's a slightly different crowd and they might know some more.

Btw

Someone's making a Zen RPG over at the forge, lol.

The Forge bugs me too

When I first got into writing rpgs the forge was the first place I found. They are overly anal about alot of things. Occassionally a good idea comes across there. I have long since stopped posting there and actually have not even gone there in a long while now as well. For my style and views on gaming 1km1kt and rpglaboratory are the best.

Building momentum here

I think we should make it a point to provide feedback to others' posts to encourage activity here. Even if a particular subject is not our style, I'm sure we could provide some valuable insights. I admit, I haven't done much of this myself, so I'll work on fixing that. Until this latest post, I had thought a trans-dimensional mist full of gargantuan insectoids had swept everyone up.

Constructive Feedback

Sorry, occasionally I read some other posts here (if they catch my eye), and I certainly haven't made many posts of my own.

I'm often too busy working on my own game designs and projects.

I'll see what I can do to be a bit more constructive...no promises, but I'll see what I can do.

What game projects are you working on?

Anything crunchy?

My numerous projects...

Project 1. Quincunx (http://quincunx.wikidot.com)
A game of supernatural hunting against a backdrop of reality TV. Elaborate, gritty, and it's taking a while to get right.

Project 2. Guerilla Television
A hybrid board-game RPG in which contestants are pitted against one another on a TV show, with victory meaning fame and fortune, failure meaning a gruesome death. Due soon. (This is a stripped down version of the Quincunx rules).

Project 3. The Eighth Sea (Revision)
Time Travelling pirates...need I say more? My only finished and published game (you can find it on Lulu), it's making some money, but it's in serious need of some revision work.

Project 4. Baron Xavier's Legacy
An old project that will be resuming work shortly as I've found a group who want to play twice a week in a new world. It's basically like Deep Space 9 or Babylon 5, but a medieval version...a city constantly threatened by war with huge and deadly empires on all sides, it survives by a combination of diplomacy, guile and magic.

Project 5. Brigaki Djili
In which the role of players and GM is reversed. The players are gypsy oracles revealing a hidden story of the past, the GM is a visiting traveller who has come to them seeking to reveal the truth. The GM describes nothing and may only ask questions. The game play is resolved by drawing beads from a bag.
