A Bit about Bytes

|

Should we set up a place for those who want to design computer games? After all, we get such requests quite a bit. It only needs to be a book and maybe an extra option in the drop down menus for sorting entires.

I understand that we can't program. However, we seem to be turning away a goodly number of potentially creative people who want to share something with the community.

There isn't that much difference between computer and table top RPGs in the design stage. A story and script must be established, a setting must be written up. Decisions made about what the characters are, what kinds of threats they will face, and how they will advance in their quest.

The biggest difference comes when one group decides which dice must be rolled, and the others decide which algorithms should run to simulate dice being rolled. And that comes mostly after the creative elements have gone through.

Perhaps the PnP authors don't worry about graphics much. Then again, perhaps we should. When you create a character in BESM or Exalted do you envision them as a real person, or an anime drawing? Do we describe our cinematic characters with the sharper color contrast of film or as we normally are?

I certainly hope for a day when table top values can make a bigger impact on the AI of a video game. Rejecting those who bring something to the table isn't one of them.

Maybe we could get profiles

Maybe we could get profiles with our interests,
then the site would act as a meeting center.

For instance, i draw a little and code a little.

but it would really nice if there was some kind of collab between us.

I think there is no problem to accept c-rpg people here, after all, the "one time n00bs" are found everywhere.

well, just my opinion.

Cheers!

Hmm

Its actually possible. in a way the book system is like it is exactly for that. just its at this point where nobody has tryed this.

eventually there might be a contest where we can all write up in a book and see what happens.

I would feel VERY honored on

I would feel VERY honored on working with you and chainsaw.

Cheers!

I wonder if...

...there is a blog out there dedicated to making computer RPGs just like RPG Lab is dedicated to making pen and paper RPGs. That way, we can quickly redirect such inquirers to the proper forum using a link here to get them there. Might work.

Idk man

The amount of us that are code trained are few, if any. At this point i have noticed that the biggest amount are 1 time noobs that run in with ideas of grandeur and say pretty much say "plz help me make game with gd website nd do all the work"

The ones that say anything different are rare, and usually leave after their first post as well. including the spammers that post 1 word entries then never come back again.

I would not advise this move.

I agree, Evil1. Lately most

I agree, Evil1. Lately most of the "posts" (and I use the word loosely) are these one-time, incomprehensible announcements of their presence and nothing else. The people who want to invent and discuss actual rpgs are having no problem making their voices heard, and anyone who wants to be you instead of some weird, illiterate, wannabee is already able to do that with our present methods.

well

I couldn't see having a blog for them to use to find a C-RPG site as being a problem. But, what I'd like to see at this site are some artists. It's an important aspect of making a game look finished and presentable. That's the only upside I see to having the C-RPG'ers, one of them might be artistic.

Errrr

Art isint needed for a game that is played via paper and pen. That is a matter of opinion.

Art of Redirection

So far as referring them to other blogs, that might work - except I'm not sure of where to send them. Not that there is a lack of such blogs - indeed, quite the opposite. So many opinions abound about MMOs that soon they will outstrip the carrying capacity of the area around them, devour all the vegetation in the area, and then suffer a population crash due to starvation. Unless we reintroduce some wolves to maintain the natural balance...

As to the issue of art - I think it could certainly help a game. The only reason its not present in my works is that my drawing ability barely makes it to stick figures. However you need the proper style for your game, as well as a proficient artist.

There is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I seem to have lost sight of it some time ago.

Art isn't a necessity to a good RPG...

...but finding a way for us game designers to meet artists that would want to collaborate on creating RPGs with artwork would be way cool. As it is, I use free clipart when I need to, but I always thought it would be cool if there was a way to find RPG-enthusiast illustrators via the internet. Perhaps RPG Lab has the tools we'd need to accomplish such.

More on Art

I will completely agree that art isn't essential to an RPG; however, it helps. It gives a visual representation of the game, or at least it can. It makes for a good reference for GM's (ie...well, it looks like this) and makes a game look more polished to the average RPG reader. That said...

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get artist who would want to work on games? My only thoughts would be, if someone here already has one, maybe you could share even if they would only put up some pre-made pieces. Additionally I assume artist congregate like other groups, so maybe one would invite others. The other being, finding a site like this one for fantasy or sci-fi or steam punk...etc artists and trying to convince a few to join here. I hate to say spam their forum, but it would seem like the quickest although probably resulting in a lower grade of artist. And I'm with CA, I can't draw. I look at art I did when I was 8 and that's still the level I'm at.

PS. I wasn't good then either.

I see eye to eye with you

Although I took a second to say that art isn't necessary, I totally agree with you that it makes a big difference.

I also have the same desire you do... finding an artist who would want to contribute freely to a free RPG. I'd imagine what it would take is finding an artist who is into RPGs, but isn't good at making them. I'd actually be up for creating a RPG from scratch that completely revolved around somebody else's artwork. They can contribute art to my RPG, or I can contribute a RPG to their art. I'd have no problem asking artists to do this, just I have no clue where to find them online. Anybody got any leads?

well

before guns were invented, men would beat desired mates or employees with a club over the head and drag them to bed/work.

find a good artist, and pray that you can get him into your truck before the cops arrive
