Character Sheet is the RPG: Alderneyvamp's contributions.

Taking up ErrinF's challenge of the one page game. What I've got uploaded at the moment is a rough with no real formatting. I was wondering if someone who has done a 1 sheet game before can check if this is in keeping and lend and hints they might have.

Download is below, thanks.

Nice work man This reminds

Nice work man
This reminds me I need to get cracking.

Detective fun.

I wanted to make a game that revolved around detective work. However RPGs tend to water down the problems of being a detective, so I've circumnavigated this in Sedimentary where players will have to learn how to deal with life as a Rock PI.

Thanks for a fourth contribution

I don't mind the one sidedness of your new RPG at all. At the same time, you could easily expand this game if you wish. Artwork would be nice, but a super simple layout is fine as well. Simpler layouts may be simple, but they are also easier for others to print out and play. This Sedimentary one pager of yourws will be cool no matter how many sides it has.

You know, I was thinking of maybe making a detective game myself for this challenge. All I had was a title 'Hardboiled'... could I possibly make a game out of Egg PI's? If so, would they be goose eggs? Time will tell...

The one page thing

I know that the challenge could technically be termed a one page thing, but I think you are missing an opportunity to use the opposite side of the paper to expand on the mystery side of the game. I like the simple rules, especially the attributes, plus the idea of rocks solving rock crimes is original (you could make a morning cartoon out of it ^_^). Maybe the first side should be for players, the second for GM's, giving some sample mystery ideas and examples of "usual suspects".

One thing I would like clarified is movement. Earlier you mention dropping a pickaxe on your foot, but later you mention that rocks don't have legs. Am I to assume that some rocks have legs and some don't?

Also, this game is a great opportunity to include some simple yet characterful artwork. Drawing a rock with a Sherlock Holmes attire or a Columbo trenchcoat would not only be funny but help set the tone and atmosphere of the game for people playing the game. I think you should try that out.

Hope my suggestions help, Sedimentary is original to the extreme :)

Well actually...

I meant dropping on a person's foot as meaning an attack on a human. Secondly no rocks have legs, they are rocks. However I will expand this and actually make it playable if you like, up until then I was just feeling silly.

Silly it may be, but . . .

. . . sometimes there is nothing like going silly in a role play session. I am all for serious moods and involving plots, but sometimes the funny bone is especially prominent. Some of may favourite sessions have been extremely slapstick. One of them was Shadowrun (grenades are fun ^_^).

To answer your question, yes, I would like to see this game realised, I think you are on to somthing :)

http://www.1km1kt.net/Aaron-White.htm

I'll get to it in the morning.

I wont give rocks legs, they can just roll about town. I think I'll have to expand it to a 2 sider if I'm going to make proper rules, maybe add in different rock types as races...

The funny bone

For some reason, a lot of the work you do absolutely cracks me up! The thought of a pirate fighting off enemies while riding a unicycle or hopping about on a pogo stick will be with me for a long time. Reminds me of a certian ninja wearing a wizards cap :)

Back on the wagon.

Well after Advent (which was pretty heavy for me) I wanted to make some games with more amusing aspects. The one pagers have allowed me to have some fun, especially The Last Sasketchewan Pirate.

But now I'm going to go back on the Wagon for big game creation. I go on study leave this friday (no school, just exams) so I'll have plenty of spare time to do some game stuff as revision isn't too important.

I hope to have some more of Garb done, though stangely enough I think all I need to do is Techniques and a whole bunch more equipment, but I'm sure I'll add more when I get into the swing of things.

Terranoma should have some substantial work in it soon. I think this is going to be bigger than Advent, not rules wise, but description wise, as already my race descriptions are marking up two pages each (rather than two to a page for Advent!) The rules will be really simple though so it shouldn't be much of a struggle.

Deus has me worried, I'm not sure where to go with it, especially as I'm intending to rewrite alot of it.

Finally I've got another secret project being typed up as we speak. It's a war game made for extensive strategy but besides from that there is no telling till the core book is done.

Despite all of the above, I think if I get an idea for something that makes me giggle, I might write it up... hmm Furniture: The Comforting...

Thanks for all the games!

If you've had your fill of one pagers for now, that's fine by me. I really appreciate your three contributions to this challenge. Thanks! Best regards finishing off your bigger games... I myself need to re-focus on my Adventuria RPG here, though I still have a character sheet RPG or two still in the works. Who knows... maybe you'll make another down the road too.

Thanks fr all the fun!

I had lots of fun doing it. I'm sorry I've not commented on yours much at all, between my studies and actual geeking sessions, I don't have much time for posting, just quick jumps to check for replies. I have, however, got copy on my computer, so will be able to read them at the weekend.

Good things come in threes

Great games. I was thinking of the Arrogant Worms even before reading the pirate game - and I'm glad to see I was right. With luck, I'll play it this weekend in conjunction with my new war game.

While I'm a little less inclined to try Waagh - I do want to say it has a very interesting mechanic. I don't recall seeing "roll 3d6 and add the lowest to the highest" anywhere else - and I've read quite a few games.

As for HCP - it wouldn't be the first time rotted corpses appear in one of my game sessions carrying picket signs. Nice way to break the mold.

There is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I seem to have lost sight of it some time ago.

Praise from the highest of the high.

Praise from you is something I clamour for, not to scare you but I value your work greatly.

Thanks for the comment of Waargh, I was trying for something I hadn't come across before, which is difficult as there is some much out there. Like I said, this comp is excellent for testing new mechanics. I might even use the Waargh mechanic in a larger game one day (perhaps a more serious look at the troubles life gives you if your an orc.)

I'm glad you like my Pirate game. You play mine and I'll play yours ;)

Maybe that's the end.

I'm not sure if I've finished but I got some inspiration and used it as quickly as I could for The Last Saskatchewan Pirate. I've tried to use another new system here, one that I quite like and might develop (if your risky you could flick a bigger coin denomination and hope for 5 successes at once, but then you might get 5 failures...)

Hope people like this one as well, it took me all of ten minutes to find the fonts!

I've added my name to all of the games now so they are officially ready to take away. Will have them on 1KM1KT once the protocall has been sorted.

New one pager.

Rather than make another page, I've just added my new one pager here for commeting.

I've decided that lots of people are making games about zombies so I was inspired to make one the allowed you to play from the zombies point of view. Thus Holy Crap Humans was made.

Hope you guys like it.

Holy good game, Batman!

Nicely done. The layout looks cool, and the game's simplicity and clever angle give it a very charming quality. It looks pretty much like a final product to me. What were you thinking might be added before you call it a final draft? Or perhaps I'm confusing your comment about the rough draft of Warrgh with Holy Crap Humans.

What's odd is that there is a sudden zombie one pager side challenge that seems to have manifested on it's own. I love it! First Evil1 came out with 'Schools Out For Eternity', then Fenway5 put forth 'Dead & Alive', and now you have added 'Holy Crap Human' into the mix, albeit with a twist on perspective. Interestingly enough, I was thinking of making a zombie one pager myself. Now I'll definitely be doing it after having read this. This is indeed an unexpectedly inspiring challenge.

Caved.

I made the font size smaller for the last part (after the character sheet) and added some Zombie Powers which you can gain with Experience. This is my final draft (unless anyone sees something unexplained or badly worded.)

I've decided I really like doing one pagers and am going to do a few more. I think when I'm all paged out, I shall put them together as a big group of 1 pagers and send them to 1KM1KT together. Perhaps all of the games made could go into a bundle. With the Authors being: The RPG LAB crew.

I like this final draft

Slight improvement over the first draft in that the zombie powers add a cool new dimension to the game.

I'm glad you enjoy making these games... I enjoy getting the games you make! Last year when we did this challenge for the first time, I discovered I had a penchant for these one page RPGs. It really is interesting how you can make a completely viable RPG in the space of one page. Plus, you can get these games done in a day or two while other games take weeks and/or months to make.

As for submitting these games to 1km1kt, by all means do it in whatever way seems most logical/convenient to you. Submit the games to 1km1kt at your leisure. As long as they sooner or later end up with their own page there, that's all I ask.

Interestingly enough, I have been discussing with Keeton (he runs both sites) what might be the best way to get this batch of one pagers at RPG Lab over to 1km1kt. Who knows... it might be easiest for him to just download the games via RPG Lab instead of waiting to get them by email. We're on it, and will probably decide on a course of action in a few days. I'm thinking I might make a special blog here that has all the submissions for the challenge available for download, or will have links available for files to large for me to upload here. We'll see what happens.

Signatures.

If you want to make a patch page that's great. All I ask is that you wait until I've done one more before you take mine. That way I can put my name in the footers of my games, just for ownership sake. Besides from that I have no problem with allowing you to grab my games.

I think it would be nice to have them all end up in one place, make it feel like a real community project.

Most definitely

No pdfs will be 'grabbed' from here without first giving a heads up to everybody participating in this challenge. I'm sure Keeton and I will work out a proper protocol, or we may just keep it as is wherein people just email in their one pagers to 1km1kt when they are ready to do so. We'll see. I'll definitely give you heads up on what the plan ends up being.

Zombies are fun.

Well I just thought I'd join in the trend and I had a half hour free, so I made it. I think I want to add a few more items to the game, or an example human enemy (like a hunter.) It's all about space, I've become too attached to my font size!

one more page.

I've added another page with some items you can get. using these items will serve as character advancement. I think it's pretty much done now. Any suggesstions before I submit it to 1KM1KT?

Looks pretty damn good as is

Excellent work! As far as I can tell Warrgh is good to go. I'll try to playtest it a little and see if there are any possible corrections before you submit it to 1km1kt, but upon first read it looks like it is all there. Way to go! Thanks for submitting such a cool game for this challenge, alderneyvamp.

More to come.

I've more ideas, but little time to type up. One is about Urban Pirates (inspired by the Captain Tractor song, the Last Sasketchian Pirate) but I think I might make that into a rules light game.

As for Waargh, I'm going to try and find an image of an orc that I can watermark onto the sheet just to give it character. Thanks for the support, now I'm done I'll have time to read the other entries.

Awesome!

Waarrgh is great! Thank you so much for contributing to the one page RPG challenge, alderneyvamp. And look how quickly you responded with a top notch game! I'll keep this rough draft until you get a more final version. Looking forward to it.

Addition/subtraction

I was wondering if it needed any more or should have stuff taken away. Main question, can I put what the game is about in the description thread? It'll only save me a couple of lines but that'll give me room to make the Rules section actually look pretty.

Thanks for the support, I hope to prettify it soon.

Answers

The challenge is to create a game that is completely self-contained within a one page PDF. Sometimes, people enter two one page PDFs representing one game (as if it is a two-sided character sheet). I say try to fit everything in the pdf. You can then have additional rules in the e-book here, but I bet you can get it all on one page.

As for examples of these one page RPGs, we made a bunch at 1km1kt.net last year. The link to Jeff's games at 1km1kt should include "Rage, Precognition, & Grace" as well as "Hex", I believe.

Here's a link to my book here that has downloadable versions of the original one page RPGs I made during the first challenge:

Hope that helps. Thanks again for the great game!
