A grandfather clock, mad a century ago from highly polished dark oak, ticked loudly in the corner. Or perhaps it just seemed louder since it was James' favorite. That meant quite a lot, there were at least a hundred other time pieces all about the office.
OCD. Nervous condition. Time spent winding clocks was moments free of pain. Not thinking of before times. Not of the fate of those sent out.
Yet that was exactly what was on his mind. As he sat behind the old desk, his dark face invisible due to the back light of the single picture window.
Half a dozen visitors fidgeted in their folding chairs. Eyes darting from clock to clock to James to clock... waiting for the inevitable speech. Always began the same way.
"I know it is asking a lot of you. Considering the rate of return, at least five of you think this is a death sentence... Our community has needs. We feel safe and isolated in our little bubble. We forget that there is an entire world beyond the gates. A world of color televisions, movie disks, medicines, metals and fabrics, arms, tools, microwaves. Microfactory templates. Men are not islands. Communities less so. At four pm, you will be escorted through the gates. Food stuffs and medicine have priority of course. But sometimes you need to live - not just survive."
The grandfather clock chimed three times.
For all of those who are wondering what is out there, the attached PDF details the different types of reanimates, the cause and their abilities. It also contains information about the signature alien power armor, and a few rule fixes as well.
