Dragon Arena
*I was partly inspired by Adventuria RPG. I thought it was a cool idea and wanted to make something like it. This is a work in progress, so I'll constantly be adding things.*
What you will need:
1 d6 (six-sided die)
Paper & Pencil (or Notepad & Keyboard)
A desire to be the best!
In Dragon Arena, you play the role of a new Dragon tamer with dreams of becoming the best. The road to being the best is difficult, though. To do so, you must enter your companion which you raise and train into the famous Dragon Arena, where it will show the results of your training in combat.
But, before you can enter your dragon into the Arena, you have to know what kind of dragon you have. You've been preparing for this day, and the egg you were given by your teacher is about to hatch!
(It goes without saying that you can technically just choose whatever dragon you want, but raising what you're given by chance is the true test of a Dragon Tamer!)
Roll a d6. If the result is:
1 = Your egg is a dull brown color.
2 = Your egg is a cloudy yellow color.
3 = Your egg is a vibrant red color.
4 = Your egg is a shimmering blue color.
5 = Your egg is an irridescent pearl color.
6 = Your egg is an inky purple color.
Now, roll another d6. If the result is:
1 = Your egg is spiky in texture.
2 = Your egg is silky in texture.
3 = Your egg is slimy in texture.
4 = Your egg is scaly in texture.
5 = Your egg is bumpy in texture.
6 = Your egg is leathery in texture.
Huzzah! Your egg has hatched! Now, match the qualities below to see what kind of dragon you got!
If your egg was:
Brown + Spiky = You got a ROCK WHELP!
Brown + Silky = You got a DUST WYRM!
Brown + Slimy = You got a MUD GIGAN!
Brown + Scaly = You got a SAND SERPENT!
Brown + Bumpy = You got an EARTH DRAKE!
Brown + Leathery = You got a STONE WYVERN!
Yellow + Spiky = You got a WIND WHELP!
Yellow + Silky = You got a SKY WYRM!
Yellow + Slimy = You got a CLOUD GIGAN!
Yellow + Scaly = You got a STORM SERPENT!
Yellow + Bumpy = You got an AIR DRAKE!
Yellow + Leathery = You got a GUST WYVERN!
Red + Spiky = You got a FLAME WHELP!
Red + Silky = You got a FIRE WYRM!
Red + Slimy = You got a MAGMA GIGAN!
Red + Scaly = You got a HEAT SERPENT!
Red + Bumpy = You got a FLARE DRAKE!
Red + Leathery = You got an INFERNO WYVERN!
Blue + Spiky = You got a WATER WHELP!
Blue + Silky = You got a TIDAL WYRM!

Purple + Silky = You got a DARK WYRM!
Purple + Slimy = You got a UMBRA GIGAN!
Purple + Scaly = You got a SHADE SERPENT!
Purple + Bumpy = You got a TWILIGHT DRAKE!
Purple + Leathery = You got a BLACK WYVERN!
Now roll another d6. If you got a:
1, 2, or 3 = Your dragon is MALE!
4, 5, or 6 = Your dragon is FEMALE!
Here are some entries from the Tamer's Tome regarding the different types of dragons. They are grouped by species, and then by elemental affinity. Read ahead to find out more about your dragon. You will find a general overview of the species along with their Qualities (more about this in a bit), followed by a more specific description of the different elemental breeds within each species. Be sure to jot down these Qualities and Affinities!
WHELPS:
The Whelp, in general, is the smallest of the dragons, only growing up to 3 feet at the most. They have large round eyes and are most often described as being "cute". However, don't let their stature and appearance decieve you. Inside that small body lies a powerful spirit, and in fact the breath weapons of the Whelp are generally considered to have the most potential for power out of all the draconic races. They are also one of the two species, along with Wyverns, that can use Greater Dragon Magic. Their wings are under-developed, alowing for limited flight, but not much more than that. In fact, most of their body is underdeveloped, except for their mouths, which can deliver a mighty bite. Their Qualities are MOUTH and MAGIC.
* Rock Whelp: Whelps that have been attuned with the element of EARTH. They are the hardiest of their brethren, with thick, rock-like scales covering most of their bodies. Because of this, though, they tend to be a bit slower.
* Wind Whelp: Whelps that have been attuned with the element of AIR. They are a little smaller, with a light yellowing skin, and a lot lighter than their kin, giving them an advantage in speed, but their lighter bodies have weaker armor than the rest.
* Flame Whelp: Whelps that have been attuned to the element of FIRE. These bright red Whelps are fiercer than the average Whelp, and have surprised more than a few opponents with their vigor. However, their increased temper has lead to a slightly diminished intelligence, making them more difficult to handle.
* Water Whelp: Whelps that have been attuned to the element of WATER. They are a deep, shimmering blue color with wave-like patterns on their scales. They are more reflective and astudious than their kin, owing to a slightly higher intelligence, but this same trait has made them more docile, as well.
* Light Whelp: Whelps that have been attuned to the element of LIGHT. Their bright, ivory scales reflect light in rainbow colors, making them popular among teenage girls. They have strong willpower, even for a Whelp, but this has caused them to be slightly proud and shun help from outside sources, making them less proficient with Dragon Magic.
* Shadow Whelp: Whelps that have been attuned to the element of DARKNESS. Their deep purple scales are a contrast to their shining golden eyes, giving them a look of mystery. The dark forces within them grant them a greater aptitude with Dragon Magic, but their reliance on this has diminished their trademark Whelp willpower a bit.
WYRM:
The Wyrm is a favorite among dragon breeders for it's easy maintenance as well as for it's lightning-fast speed in battle. With its lithe, thin body, it's a hard target to hit, especially for a slower opponent. However, because of their light frame they aren't as hearty as other dragons. They have a single pair of taloned arms on their upper body near their wings, but they are so small that they are mainly only used for eating and finding a perch. However, the Wyrm has large, powerful wings, the largest of all the dragons, that it uses to move effortlessly through the air, and as it's body is mostly tail (a trait it has in common with the Serpent), it relies heavily on that in combat as well. It usually grows to about 5 to 6 feet in length by the time they are mature. Their Qualities are WINGS and TAIL.
* Dust Wyrm: Wyrms that have been attuned to the element of EARTH. They are slightly slower than the their brethren, but make up for this with sand-encrusted scales that provide them and increased defense.
* Sky Wyrm: Wyrms that have been attuned to the element of AIR. Their golden-scaled bodies are even more streamlined than the typical Wyrm, allowing for unprecidented speed and agility, the highest among all dragons. However, the evolution has caused their bones to become even more brittle, giving them the lowest defensive power of all dragons as well.
* Fire Wyrm: Wyrms that have been attuned to the Element of FIRE. These Wyrms have red and orange scales that shine like fire, and they have the temper to match. Their extra-fiery blood makes them fiercer than other Wyrms, but this also causes them to lose focus as well.
*Tidal Wyrm: Wyrms that have been attuned to the element of WATER. With their shimmering blue scales and iridescent wings, they are a sight to behold as they dart through the air. Their are somewhat more intelligent than other Wyrms, but also more docile.
* Divine Wyrm: Wyrms that have been attuned to the element of LIGHT. Their pearly scales and wing flash in the sun as the fly around. They are more proud than other Wyrms and have a stronger will, but have less affinity with Dragon Magic.
* Dark Wyrm: Wyrms that have been attuned to the element of DARKNESS. Sometimes mistaken for flying shadows, these Wyrms have a greater affinity for Dragon Magic, but tend to be a bit more cowardly as a result.
GIGAN:
It was a long time before the giant, toad-like Gigan was fully accepted as a true Dragon, mostly due to their lack of wings, tail, or claws. However, once one sees it unleash a might breath weapon, no doubt can be left in the mind of the skeptic. Gigans are generally the largest of the breeds, growing quickly and reaching heights of 6 feet or more, and weighing in excess of 750 lbs. Obviously, their size and girth are their most prominent traits, and they make full use of them, crushing enemies with their mighty bulk. Also, similar as they are to toads, they have massive maws with can swallow some smaller opponents whole! However, due to their size, they are extremely slow to act, and this makes them a challenge for trainers. Their Qualities are BODY and MOUTH.
* Mud Gigan: Gigans that have been attuned to the element of EARTH. Looking like massive monsters made of slimy mud, these Gigans are the toughest of all dragons defense-wise, but are also the slowest.
* Cloud Gigan: Gigans that have been attuned to the element of AIR. Cloud Gigans are a tranquil light blue in color, with white, cloud-like markings on their backs. They are slightly leaner and faster than other Gigans, but lose a bit of their trademark defense in excahnge.
* Magma Gigan: Gigans that have been attuned to the element of FIRE. They are bright red with orange, flame-like markings on their backs. It is said that lava flows through their veins and that is what causes them to be fiercer fighters than other Gigans. However, it also seems to have cooked their brains a little, as they aren't as smart as their brethren.
* Mist Gigan: Gigans that have been attuned to the the element of WATER. These Gigans are a deep blue in color, with lighter blue, wave like patterns on their backs. they are more tranquil than other Gigans, but have developed a higher intelligence, as well.
* Sacred Gigan: Gigans that have been attuned to the element of LIGHT. They are the color of dull ivory, with raised bumps on their backs that resemble giant pearls. They tend to have a stronger willpower than other Gigans, but sacrifice a certain adeptness with Dragon Magic in the process.
* Umbra Gigan: Gigans that have been attuned to the element of DARKNESS.They are the color of murky twilight, with silvery star patterns on their backs. They tend to be a bit meeker than their brethren, but make up for it with and increased aptitude for Dragon Magic.
SERPENT:
Thought to be the product of an ancient union of a dragon and a snake, the Serpent, like its name suggests, has the appearence of a massive snake, wingless and legless, but with a powerful body, growing to lengths upwards of 20 feet, with a ridge of plates down their backs. They are agile and cunning and able to assert a surprising amount of strength. In battle, they make gooduse of their muscles and body to crush opponents, as well as make devestating strikes with their tale. They are the smartest of the dragonic races, and for this they are preferred by some trainers because they are quick to learn and easy to deal with. Some have said they they are even smart enough to learn human speech. However, they are somewhat cowardly, and prefer to use their wits more often than their brawn. Their Qualities are TAIL and BODY.
* Sand Serpent: Serpents that have been attuned to the element of EARTH. Their bodies have are covered in a hard layer of compacted sand. Because of this, it slightly hinders their movement. However, it also gives them extra defense against attack, making them slightly sturdier than their brethren.
* Storm Serpent: Serpents that have been attuned to the element of AIR. Their scales have the color of brewing stormclouds and their back plates have been known to spark with electricity from time to time. Their bodies are leaner, and their scales and plates more streamlined, allowing them more manuverablitiy but costing them defense.
* Heat Serpent: Serpents that have been attuned to the element of FIRE. It is said that water evaporates instantly upon contact with their glowing, ember-like scales. They have a fiery temper and are stronger and fiercer in combat, but this makes them hasty and impulsive and generally of lower intelligence than their kin.
* Sea Serpent: Serpents that have been attuned to the element of WATER. Their shining blue scales and aquamarine plates give the illusion of waves as the move about. They are extremely smart, even for Serpents. In fact, they are in general the smartest of all the draconic races. However, their highly developed minds comes with a slight disdain of combat, and therefor are lacking a bit in that department.
* SHINING SERPENT: Serpents that have been attuned to the element of LIGHT. These serpents shine and shimmer like fershly fallen snow and their plates are opalescent. They have a higher conviction and willpower than other Serpents, but lack their aptitude with Dragon Magic.
* SHADE SERPENT: Serpents that have been attuned to the element of DARKNESS. Their scales and plates shimmer with the color of dull twilight sparkled with silver. They have a higher aptitude for Dragon Magic than their kin, but they very hesitant, even more so than normal.
DRAKE:
The Drake is immediately distinguished by it's fierceness. It is quick to anger and tends to stay that way for a long time. However, there are more than a few who value this trait, as it makes them some of the best fighters in the Arena. It is said that the first champion of the Dragon Arena was a Drake. In general, they aren't as adept with Dragon Magic as other dragons. They have thin, wirey frames and assault their enemies with their large, razor sharp talons and wide, strong wings. They are not very large, however, as they only grow to 5 feet at the most. Their Qualities are CLAWS and WINGS.
* Earth Drake: Drakes that have been attuned to the element of EARTH. Sleeping Earth Drakes are commonly mistaken as statues due to their grey, granite-like skin. Because of this, many an unwary snooper has learned otherwise the hard way. They have a higher resistance to attack, but their stone skin slows them down in the process.
* Air Drake: Drakes that have been attuned to the element of AIR. Their golden-hued bodies are thinner and leaner than their kin, which makes them more vulnerable to attack, but in turn makes them more agile as well.
* Flare Drake: Drakes that have been attuned to the element of FIRE. Without a doubt, these fiery-scaled Drakes are the fiercest of all dragons. Their prowess in raw, physical combat is unmatched. However, their ferocity is so consuming that it leaves little room for thought, making them almost mindless slaves to their temper.
* Aqua Drake: Drakes that have been attuned to the element of WATER. These drakes sport the aquamarine hues of the ocean. They have a higher intellect than their kin, but their affinity with water seems to have cooled their ferocity a bit.
* Holy Drake: Drakes that have been attuned to the element of LIGHT. These pearly warriors combine the Drakes trademark fiery temper with and equally fiery spirit, making for a powerful combination. However, this doesn't leave much room for much else, and they lack a decent ability with Dragon Magic.
* Twilight Drake: Drakes that have been attuned to the element of DARKNESS. Their purple- and silver-sparkled scales may look pretty, but don't let that fool you. Twilight Drakes boast impressive prowess in melee combat as well as having a higher skill with Dragon Magic than any other Drake, making for a powerful combination. However they are weak-willed and tend to be influenced easily.
WYVERN:
The Wyvern is thought to be the oldest of the draconic races and is commonly thought of as the model from which all the others were derived. But, like the others, they, too, have evolved into their own special niche of dragonkind. They look like the traditional dragons of legend, but much smaller in size, growing to about 7 to 8 feet in length. Their magical powers have have developed so much that most of their other body parts have become weak, and their wings are only good for gliding short distances. Their claws, however, remain sharp and ready for use. Owing to their ancient lineage, they are also capable of using Greater Dragon Magic, like the Whelp, although they have a harder time learning it because of their simpler minds. Their Qualities are MAGIC and CLAWS.
* Stone Wyvern: Wyverns that have been attuned to the element of EARTH. Covered in rock-like scales the color and texture of slate, these Wyverns have more resistance to attack than others. However, due to the friction this causes, they are less mobile than their kin.
* Gust Wyvern: Wyverns that have been attuned to the element of AIR. These Wyverns have scales that shine like dull topaz. They are leaner and their bones are lighter and thinner than their kin, providing them with greater mobility but costing them defense in the process.
* Inferno Wyvern: Wyverns that have been attuned to the element of FIRE. These orange-scaled and ruby-eyed Wyverns are a vicious combination, having an aptitude in both physical and magical combat. However, they are unruly and hard to control, as well as being the slowest learners of all dragonkind.
* Hydro Wyvern: Wyverns that have been attuned to the element of WATER. These wyverns have scales the color of csea coral. They are more intelligent than the average wyvern, giving them an edge in learning, but their docile nature makes them less competent physical fighters.
* White Wyvern: Wyverns that have been attuned to the element of LIGHT. These Wyversn have pale white scales and shine like the full moon. They are more brave than the usual Wyvern, but lack their trademark aptitude with Dragon Magic.
* Black Wyvern: Wyverns that have been attuned to the element of DARKNESS. These Wyverns get their name from their jagged, obsidian-colored scales. They are sometimes reffered to as "Dragon Sorcerers" because they posess the highest aptitude for Dragon Magic out of all dragonkind. However, they tend to be spooked very easily and are rather weak willed, making it an interesting trade-off.
Now, as you have seen, each dragon has different attributes, strengths and weaknesses. Their main attributes are conveyed by a set of numbers that represent each particular dragon's ability in a certain area. These attributes are commonly referred to as "stats". Here is an overview of each attribute and what it represents in the world of Dragon Arena:
* Attack (ATK): This stat represents a dragon's raw physical strength, which determines the amount of damage they can inflict with physical attacks.
* Defense (DEF): This stat represents a dragon's resiliency and resistance to damage. It determines the amount of damage they receive.
* Agility (AGI): This stat represents a dragon's nimbleness and overall speed. It determines their ability to land attacks as well as dodge them. It also determines how much AP a dragon has.
* Intelligence (INT): This stat represents a dragon's capacity for intelligence and learning. It determines how easily they are tricked. It also determines how easily they learn new techniques.
* Magic (MAG): This stat represents a dragon's mystical qualities, and therefore their aptitude in using Dragon Magic.
* Spirit (SPR): This stat represents a dragon's force of will and determination. It determines how easily the dragon is influenced. It also determines the power of the dragon's breath weapon.
* Life Points (LP): This stat represents a dragon's vital force. It determines how much damage a dragon can take before they faint from exhaustion.
* Action Points (AP): This stat represents a dragon's ability to perform in battle. It determines how often a dragon can act during its turn.
Now you have an idea of what each stat means, so it's time to figure out what stats your dragon starts out with. Remember, each dragon begins life with different abilities, but each one is also statistically balanced, so there is no such thing as the "best dragon". Some dragons excel in certain areas and don't do so well in others. It's a measure of the tamer's skill, not the dragon's, to prove it's effectiveness in the arena.
Dragons all originated from the same source, and therefor have similar features. Millenia of evolution have changed them all in one way or another, but they all still revolve around the same base. Because of this, all newborn dragons start with a base stat of 3 in each of the six stats. However, these are influenced by the dragon's species and elemental affinity, which result in each particular breeds true starting stats. To figure those out, refer to the following excerpt from Tamer's Tome to determine the stat influences of each breed and element.
* Whelp: +1 SPR, -1 ATK * Earth: +1 DEF, -1 AGI
* Wyrm: +1 AGI, -1 DEF * Air: +1 AGI, -1 DEF
* Gigan: +1 DEF, -1 AGI * Fire: +1 ATK, -1 INT
* Serpent: +1 INT, -1 SPR * Water: +1 INT, -1 ATK
* Drake: +1 ATK, -1 MAG * Light: +1 SPR, -1 MAG
* Wyvern: +1 MAG, -1 INT * Darkness: +1 MAG, -1 SPR
For example, a Flame Whelp's starting stats would be:
ATK: 3 (Base: 3, +1, -1)
DEF: 3
AGI: 3
INT: 2 (Base: 3, -1)
MAG: 3
SPR: 4 (Base: 3, +1)
As another example, a Mud Gigan's starting stats would be:
ATK: 3
DEF: 5 (Base: 3, +1, +1)
AGI: 1 (Base: 3, -1, -1)
INT: 3
MAG: 3
SPR: 3
To determine starting LP, roll a die and add the result to your dragon's DEF plus 10. For example, if the Mud Gigan above rolled a 4, it's LP would be 19 (Roll of 4 + DEF of 5 + 10).
Determining AP is very simply. AP is always equal to half the dragon's AGI, rounded up. Therefor, a dragon with an AGI of 1 or 2 would have an AP of 1, while a dragon with an AGI of 5 or 6 would have an AP of 3.
And of course, you can't expect your dragon to compete in the arena if it can't fight. Luckily, dragon's are born instinctively knowing how to defend themselves. To determine the technique your dragon starts of with, roll a die and compare the result with the table below denoting your dragon's breed.
Whelp:
1,2 - Snap: Physical mouth attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
3,4 - Miniburst: Neutral magic damage (1d + MAG) 1 AP
5,6 - Both of the above
Wyrm:
1,2 - Wing Beat: Physical wing attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
3,4 - Whiptail: Physical tail attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
5,6 - Both of the above
Gigan:
1,2 - Tackle: Physical body attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
3,4 - Snap: Physical mouth attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
5,6 - Both of the above
Serpent:
1,2 - Whiptail: Physical tail attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
3,4 - Tackle: Physical body attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
5,6 - Both of the above
Drake:
1,2 - Rake: Physical claw attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
3,4 - Wing Beat: Physical wing attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
5,6 - Both of the above
Wyvern:
1,2 - Miniburst: Neutral magic damage (1d + MAG) 1 AP
3,4 - Whiptail: Physical tail attack (1d + ATK) 1 AP
5,6 - Both of the above
((I'm still working on getting it playable. Almost!))
