Any interest in an October Halloween RPG challenge?

|

I'm curious if there'd be any interest in a challenge for the month of October for any RPG labber to create a Halloween-themed RPG. It doesn't have to specifically be about Halloween, but should be about the undead, witchcraft, or something else that would relate to Halloween. For instance, I have an idea for an RPG that would be about the Mafia versus vampires, what with vampires being quite appropriate for Halloween. I would politely request that we refrain from zombie RPGs, as we have quite a bit of those available at 1km1kt and RPG Laboratory.

Any takers? I haven't started the challenge yet, as I'd like to see if there is a general interest in doing this. Challenges like this can be a fun way to test your RPG-making skills and come up with new RPGs you may not have thought up before. This challenge will be to make a Halloween-themed RPG by October 31st, one you will submit either as a pdf file, a blog, or a e-book here at RPG Lab. Preferably, it'd be cool to have submissions in pdf form available for download in a blog here (note that there is a 1MB size limit for what you can upload here), preferably with artwork, as there is a ton of free Halloween clipart out on the internet. Just do a search of "free clipart Halloween", and you will find quite a few sites with free clipart to use, as long as you make note of who supplied the art freely for your RPG.

Depending on response to this blog, I will either start the challenge a little later this week or not at all. I'm guessing it will probably be a go in a few days, but I'll wait and see for now.

It's on!

The October 2007 Halloween RPG Challenge has begun. Take the link to 'sign up' for the challenge.

Thanks for all the feedback in this blog. I look forward to what RPGs come out of this challenge.

So far

We have 3 people interested in this possible challenge: Me, Evil1, and Relentless. Let's see if we can get one or two more participants before the week is through, then I will start the challenge if so.

well

for me a Halloween themed rpg won't be too tough

it will probably be a quickie or a 1 pager though

That'll work

You can take out two challenges in one if you make a 1-page Halloween-themed RPG. I might be able to make my 'Mafioso vs. Nosferatu' RPG into a two-sided one-page RPG, but I doubt it. It will probably end up being just a little more. Given the time span for this possible challenge, I imagine we will end up getting RPGs with fewer pages to them.

I could be

I have been pretty busy, so if I did knock out an RPG, it might be a lite one. If this event gets underway, I do have an idea about players being confined in a building. One of them transforms at random into a killing machine, but noone knows who, and the person who does cannot remember it. It is more of a game than an RPG, but I might consider it.

I always liked that concept

Wherein there is a group of 'normal' people who then have one of their own change into some sort of monster or killing machine. A lite RPG is fine, as the time limit for this challenge will most likely lead to smaller RPGs anyway.

Things to do in October

Personally, I probably won't take part. My challange for all hallows eve is to end my several month hiatus and get some work done on D&B - a revised version is being edited and a few new AZ stories are coming together.

The "re-imagination contest" should be ending in the next day or so, and dealt with some ideas like werewolves and vampires. (And ways to make them fresh.) So perhaps part of this challange could be to include a monster from a foreign mythology or one that most people don't find in their games regularly - a Rushaka, Tommy Knockers, or Kappa for instance. If all goes well the entrants and readers might learn something about foreign cultures in the process.

There is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I seem to have lost sight of it some time ago.

Interesting suggestion

I like your idea of using different monsters than the norm, but I think the only parameter for this challenge, should it happen, is that the RPG be Halloween-related. The rest is up to whomever participates. Still, I hope people take note of your suggestion, as adding the extra challenge of finding an unconventional monster could be just the thing for some people. Besides, any new monster/undead RPGs that DON'T involve zombies should be enough for this challenge, don't you think?

Yeah

Make it hard. any fool can make a zombie rpg. Lets make it interesting and find unconventianol monsters. (Meaning no zombies, vampires, werewolves, or ghosts)

This is just my suggestion.

I´m interested in

I´m interested in participating.. and i think i have a cool idea.

Here in Brazil there are a few people who celebrate the halloween, but they celebratein american fashion.

however, i live in a place in Brazil where there are A LOT of Folklore about witchcraft... and you know... nobody knows about Brazilian folklore, so i think it would be nice to have players playing as tourists or Brazilians against the supernatural evil forces of Macumba (Brazilian "voodoo"), candomblé (same thing, another variant) and stuff.

my favorite supernatural brazilian creature is the Bernunça
a six-legged reptilian who eats children and lays a smaller version of itself moments later and the Boi-tatá that have a terrible sounding name (lol) but its actually a giant fiery snake with eyes in the entire body :P

of course, the descriptions and legends VARY A LOT, but there is no problem in some cosmetic changes, no? :P

Cheers!

Neat

Yeah, that sounds pretty cool.

Sure

Why not? I'll throw my hat in the ring. It's been a while since I tried anything like this.
