Monster Army RPG for the 2008 RPG Lab character sheet challenge

|

Here is my fourth submission for the 2008 Character Sheet Is The RPG Challenge III.

Inspired by the game King Of The Tabletop (which later became expanded into Kings & Things*), Monster Army RPG represents a ragtag militia of monsters on a war campaign to conquer the lands that make up the fantasy world in which they dwell.

I really like how this one turned out, and will be taking a break from making any more one page RPGs for the time being. I may end up adding another game or two before the year ends, but for now I have contributed enough to this year's challenge.

Enjoy!

Peace, Errin : )

hey Errin, I gotta say this

hey Errin, I gotta say this game is really good, I really like the level of monster customization. just being able to call the monsters whatever you want really lets me enjoy it a lot since I love to try making up my own creatures and using obscure strange things (like the sinister potted plant! 1 battle from the jungle no power!) and Dalek! (6 battle from the desert and armored!) ::was watching a DR. Who Re-run at the time:: and my only problem was it took a while to set up battles so i ended up reusing already made enemies to save time (I saved the Dalek for later battles). though all and all I liked this game a lot more than the Ghoul game you posted before (truth be told I had a bit of trouble reading it, my eyes aren't that great some times). I'm going to be playing this Monster Army game a few times tonight (once I get a good character with the magick power from the desert I'll add the good Doctor in hopes of handling my Dalek problem!) good game! no real need to say it but keep up the good work!

What a clever twist!

Thanks, James.

I got a big kick out of your Dr. Who monster creation. I was realizing yesterday after making the game available for download that the monster customization was probably one of the best aspects of the game. Though I used an example of a Monster Army that was made up of various random monsters, one could customize their monsters most anyway. You could make them all be orcs of one degree or another, or they could all be hounds led by a magical master of hounds, or they could be a bunch of blobs, or they could be an army of undead... the list could go on and on.

Of all the games I've made for the challenge, I like this one the best. Though most of it's mechanics are derived from Tom Wham's King Of The Tabletop game, I was able to alter them in an interesting way to make a very fun one page RPG.

As for my Graveyard Ghoul game, it's cool, but I wondered if it's font might make it hard to read and play. I'll see if I can make a pdf of my Ghoul one pager that is of a simpler font.

Sample play: Monster Creation

I've decided to post some samples of how to play Monster Army.

This post is about how to create and name Monsters in the game, using the creation of a Monster Army as an example.

Okay, I'm a new player starting a new game of Monster Army RPG. The first thing I do is roll a die to determine how many Monsters my Army starts with. I roll a 2, adding 6 to the die roll to get 8 Monsters in my Army initially.

I must then create all 8 Monsters to get my Army started.

For the first Monster, I roll a die and get a 3 for it's Battle value. I then roll a 1 for if the Monster has a Power, which means it does have a Power. I roll for the Monster's Power, getting a 1. The Monster has the Power of Magick. I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 1. The Monster is from the Woods. Lastly, I name the Monster 'Elf Mage' as I feel that best represents it.

Army.

Sample Play: Exploration and Recruitment

This post is about how to explore and recruit in the game, using the Monster Army I created in the last post.

As a new player I have created my Monster Army and now begin it's war campaign. My Army enters a new Land. I roll a die and get a 2. The Land is the Hills.

Now that I have entered the Land, I roll a die for what my exploration leads to. I roll a 2, encountering a Recruit Battalion. I roll a die to determine how many Recruits there are in the Battalion, getting a 4. I will make 4 Recruits.

For the first Recruit, I roll a die and get a 3 for it's Battle value. I then roll a 6 for if the Monster has a Power, which means it does have a Power. I roll for the Monster's Power, getting a 3. The Monster has the Power of Charger. I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 2. The Monster is from the Hills. Lastly, I name the Monster 'Centaur' as I feel that best represents it.

For the second Recruit, I roll a die and get a 2 for it's Battle value. I then roll a 3 for if the Monster has a Power, which means it does not have a Power. I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 4. The Monster is from the Desert. Lastly, I name the Monster 'Sand Fox' as I feel that best represents it.

For the third Recruit, I roll a die and get a 5 for it's Battle value. I then roll a 2 for if the Monster has a Power, which means it does not have a Power. I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 1. The Monster is from the Woods. Lastly, I name the Monster 'Tree Ent' as I feel that best represents it.

For the fourth Recruit, I roll a die and get a 4 for it's Battle value. I then roll a 1 for if the Monster has a Power, which means it does have a Power. I roll for the Monster's Power, getting a 4. The Monster has the Power of Armored. I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 5. The Monster is from the Arctic. Lastly, I name the Monster 'Ice Golem' as I feel that best represents it.

Now that all the Recruits have been made, I decide which, if any, I want to try to add to my Army. Since I have room for 4 Monsters in my Army (which currently has 8 Monsters), I decide to try to add all four Monsters.

First, I roll for the Centaur. I get a 5, which is higher than it's Battle of 3, so the Centaur adds to my Army. I write all of the Centaur's info down as the ninth Monster in my Army.

Next, I roll for the Sand Fox. I get a 1, which is lower than it's Battle of 2, so the Sand Fox does not add to my Army.

Next, I roll for the Tree Ent. I get a 3, which is lower than it's Battle of 5, so the Tree Ent does not add to my Army.

Lastly, I roll for the Ice Golem. I get a 4, which is equal to it's Battle of 4, so the Ice Golem adds to my army. I write all of the Ice Golem's info down as the tenth Monster in my Army.

There... I just explored and recruited with my Monster Army. Simple, right?

I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 5. The Monster is from the Arctic. Lastly, I name the Monster 'White Dragon' as I feel that best represents it.

For the seventh Enemy, I roll a die and get a 4 for it's Battle value. I then roll a 1 for if the Monster has a Power, which means it does have a Power. I roll for the Monster's Power, getting a 2. The Monster has the Power of Charger. I then roll for the Monster's Land, getting a 1. The Monster is from the Woods. Lastly, I name the Monster 'Unicorn' as I feel that best represents it.

Now that all the Enemies have been made, warfare occurs. The sides are as follows:
My Army...
Elf Mage 3 Magick Woods
Dire Wolf 3 Hills
Manticore 4 Ranged Jungle
Swamp Gas 2 Venom Swamp
Yeti 5 Arctic
Great Ape 6 Jungle
Sphinx 5 Flying Desert
Bog Goblin 1 Swamp
Centaur 3 Charger Hills
Ice Golem 4 Armored Arctic

Enemy Army...
Bull Frog 2 Swamp
Sand Shark 5 Desert
Dwarf Archer 3 Ranged Hills
Mandragora Man 1 Jungle
Pixie 2 Magick Woods
White Dragon 6 Arctic
Great Hunter 4 Ranged Jungle
Wood Sprite 2 Woods
Swamp Bat 1 Flying Swamp
Unicorn 4 Charger Woods

Due to the warfare occurring in a Land that is the Swamp, the Battle of the Swamp Gas increases by 1 to 3, the Battle of the Bog Goblin increases by 1 to 2, the Battle of the Bull Frog increases by 1 to 3, and the Battle of the Swamp Bat increases by 1 to 2. This increase only lasts for the duration of the warfare in the Swamp.

Now I roll first for all my Ranged Monsters and Enemies...

For the Manticore, I roll a 2. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Dwarf Archer, I roll a 5. No Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the Great Hunter, I roll a 4. One Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

Wounds accrued due to Ranged Monsters/Enemies are applied before all other Monsters and Enemies are rolled for. Among the Enemies, the Mandragora Man is removed from play before it gets to roll. Among my Army, the Bog Goblin is removed from play before it gets to roll.

Now I roll for all my non-ranged Monsters and Enemies...

For the Elf Mage, I roll a 5. Using the Power of Magick, I reroll the die and get 3. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Dire Wolf, I roll a 1. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Swamp Gas, I roll a 3. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Yeti, I roll a 6. No Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Great Ape, I roll a 6. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Sphinx, I roll a 5. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Centaur, I roll a 3. Using the Power of Charger, I roll a second time and get a 4. One Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Ice Golem, I roll a 5. No Wound has been accrued by the Enemies.

For the Bull Frog, I roll a 5. No Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the Sand Shark, I roll a 2. One Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the Pixie, I roll a 4. Using the Power of Magick, I reroll the die and get 6. No Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the White Dragon, I roll a 1. One Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the Wood Sprite, I roll a 3. No Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the Swamp Bat, I roll a 2. One Wound has been accrued by my Monsters.

For the Unicorn, I roll a 4. Using the Power of Charger, I roll a second time and get a 1. Two Wounds have been accrued by the Enemies.

Now that all Monsters and Enemies have been rolled for, Wounds are applied.

The Enemies accrued a total of 6 Wounds. One of the Wounds was due to Venom, so a die is rolled. I roll a 5, so a total of 7 Wounds are applied to the Enemies. Due to the Power of Flying, the Swamp Bat has a die rolled for it when a Wound is applied to it. The die roll is a 1, so the Wound is ignored. The Swamp Bat has another Wound applied to it and has a die rolled for it again. The die roll is a 6, so the Swamp Bat is removed from play. The Bull Frog, Dwarf Archer, Pixie, Great Hunter, and Wood Sprite are removed from play.

My Army accrued a total of 5 Wounds. One of the Wounds is applied to the Ice Golem, and is ignored due to the Power of Armored. Due to the Power of Flying, the Sphinx has a die rolled for it when a Wound is applied to it. The die roll is a 5, so the Wound is ignored. Instead of using the power of Flying by applying any further Wounds to the Sphinx, the Elf Mage, Dire Wolf, and Swamp Gas are removed from play.

Warfare ends with my Army consisting of the Manticore, Yeti, Great Ape, Sphinx, Centaur, and Ice Golem, and the Enemies consisting of the Sand Shark, White Dragon, and Unicorn. Since there are still Monsters and Enemies in play, another warfare occurs...

There... I just conducted warfare with my Monster Army. Cool, right?

This concludes all my sample play posts. Hope they helped explain Monster Army RPG's gameplay and rules better.

Peace, Errin : )
