The October 2007 Halloween RPG Challenge

|

As discussed in this recent blog, we are starting a RPG-making challenge for October for those that want to participate.

The challenge is to make and submit a Halloween-themed RPG here at RPG Lab by or on October 31st. The RPG you make should either be available for download in pdf form via blog here at RPG Lab, or be in e-book form here. Pdf form would be prefered, as then you could include spooky artwork in your Halloween-themed RPG.

By 'Halloween-themed', I mean any horror type RPG that will fit in with the Halloween spirit. There is an additional parameter to this challenge, though, in order to add a twist and throw a curveball to the RPG makers participating. The parameter is that RPGs submitted for this challenge CANNOT be about standard monsters/horrors such as zombies, vampires, werewolves, skeletons, etc. Instead, you should pick an unconventional or little known monster/horror to be part of your RPG. None of the standard monster fare... you must find an obscure monster or make one up. Of course, it doesn't necessarily have to be a 'monster'... anything that ties into Halloween/horror and is different than the more common themes will work. I'm sure the people here will be able to think up quite a few possibilities. Also, besides unconventional monsters, there is a variation for this challenge in which you can make a RPG with conventional monsters put into an unconventional situation. The point is to add some sort of twist which makes the RPG a challenge for you to make.

Since this challenge is being issued only weeks before it ends, I am going to guess that we will mainly get short submissions for it. That works fine for me. In fact, you might want to consider making a one page Halloween-themed RPG for this challenge, as that will tie in with the 2007 Character Sheet Is The RPG Challenge, which is going on until the end of the year. Just a suggestion...

So, who besides me is ready to take this Halloween RPG challenge? Please 'sign up' for the challenge by commenting in this blog and stating what Halloween-themed RPG you intend to make. I look forward to seeing what games end up being made due to this challenge, and I hope everybody involved has a challenging and rewarding experience from participating. Good luck and happy Halloween!

I failed at my own challenge!

Well, I've learned to never try to make a RPG on the day of Halloween. Too many things to do that night... I had a concept put together and a system worked out, but didn't get enough time to make a full draft. To be honest, it took me forever to pick on obscure monster, which was another reason I was not able to promptly make a submission.

I guess I will have to copy the Simpsons and have my Halloween challenge entry come in after Halloween. It should be done in a day or two, depending on if I want to incorporate artwork.

Thanks to everybody who took part in this mini-challenge, and I look forward to adding my Halloween RPG to the list that includes yours.

I'm sure you can allow yourself a little lee-way!

I for one will quite happily wait for a while. Mind you, if you had managed to do it, you could have put yourself down for the 24 Hour RPG challenge.

Done and done

I submitted my entry today, two days after Halloween. Were it not for bad planning (it can get busy around Halloween, what with all the parties), I would have submitted on time.

No big deal, though... the point is to have a new game to share with others here, even if I was late on the challenge's deadline.

I guess this concludes the Halloween RPG challenge. It was a fun, spontaneous exercise, even if not too many people participated. The games we got done for the challenge were all about quality, not quantity, anyway, so it was well worth it. Thanks again to Evil1 and Gentleman John for their games created for this challenge. Good work all around!

Oh good

Seems we do have more than two participants. We now have two submissions for this challenge: Evil1's The Usual Suspects and Gentleman John's It Lives. Halloween is only a day away, so hopefully we will get more.

Me, i've been struggling for a concept and am way behind schedule, but that's okay because I was waiting for the day of Halloween anyway to submit something. Hopefully, i'll be able to submit an entry to my own challenge!

Only two so far?

So is it just Evil1 and myself doing this challenge? Maybe I should call it off, since RPG Lab seems to be pretty dead currently.

It'd help if I could think of an obscure monster to make an RPG out of, but so far I have yet to think up any good ideas on that matter. Perhaps I should have left the challenge open to any Halloween-related topic, not just an obscure monster. Doubt if it matters, though... it's more a case of the site's traffic dying down.

I'm going to stick with this challenge and hope that I can figure out a cool idea before Halloween rolls around. Hopefully, more participants will crop up too.

Scratch that

I still can't think of an ibscure monster to make an RPG out of. I thought I had a good idea with 'The King In Yellow', but that turned out to be too abstract of a concept once I read up on it more. Back to the drawing board...
