Tindalos RPG, my belated entry for the Halloween RPG Challenge

|

Well, it was a couple days late due to bad planning, but here is my submission for the Halloween RPG Challenge. It's a two-sided one page solo RPG called Tindalos, wherein you've summoned an evil creature called The Hound of Tindalos. The hound is determined to hunt you down and devour you, so you must scour the town of Arkham as you seek a way to thwart the beast before it slays you. The game is inspired by the weird tale 'The Hounds Of Tindalos' written by Frank Belknap Long. The game is also full of references to other stories by H.P. Lovecraft, with quite a few examples taken out of the Cthulhu Mythos. If you are not familiar with the subject matter the game is based on, I highly recommend reading the authors I just mentioned.

When this challenge first started, I had quite a time thinking up an interesting monster/concept. At first, I didn't want to fall back on the Cthulhu Mythos, but I've always liked the Hound of Tindalos and the story it was based on. Rather than trying to be like the Call Of Cthulhu RPG, I wanted to make a simple solo RPG based upon the Cthulhu literature rather than the Cthulhu roleplaying game.

Thanks to everybody who took part in the Halloween challenge. It was only a small group, but we were able to submit some interesting games. I for one am glad I proposed the challenge last month, and really like the games made for it. My entry might be the weakest one of the lot!

Enjoy!

New layout thanks to Chainsaw Aardvark

Okay, so Jason (aka Mr Aardvark) took my Tindalos RPG pdf and changed it's layout to a version I greatly approve of. It is the new 'official' pdf for this game, and it has been uploaded now. Please download the new pdf with it's new layout, and I think you will find the game much more playable and even more fun. I am really happy how this one turned out, even if it was a tad late for the Halloween Challenge. This game ended up being a lot more colorful and fun than I thought it would be, both to make and to play.

I must admit that the Halloween Challenge ended up unexpectedly renewing my interest in the character sheet rpg challenge that is still going on for 2007. I think I'll make a few more quick n easy solo games before it is all through.

Try the new font version out

Okay, I don't know what the deal with that last font was, but I've tried a whole new one for Tindalos RPG. It is available for download now. Hopefully, it will be much easier to read than the last version.

Enjoy!

Oh ya

And I did do some editing besides just changing the font. Health has been axed and now it is solely Wounds, which have slightly altered rulewise to include that Wounds from the hound can never be decreased. Should make gameplay a little easier, plus I needed the space for this new version with a much better font.

Ouchies

There is a definate lack of indentation and readability. I couldint read it because it made my eyes hurt. I know you had to squeeze it into a single page; and you certainly get props for writing that much.

On the plus side: It looks very cool, and that is certainly a uncommon monster. I will read it through later

Really?

I used size 20 font, which is about the same size for most of the one page RPGs I've done. I'll change the font if there is some sort of viewing problem, though. This is an initial draft I've posted for the game... though I'd hope for it to be the final one, I can alter it if there is trouble with it's readability.

Readability Revisons

I'm not sure where you got size 20 from. Cut and pasted into word, the body text is 9 point and the title 14. Changing it to the more standard 12 with 1 inch margins all around expands the document to 5 pages!

There is quite a bit of redundancy that can be cut! Why does there need to be wounds and health that change together? Just have health that goes down with injury or wounds that go up. And on each line only note if the roll heals or hurts rather than stating "If you fail the test, increase your Wounds by 1 and decrease your Health" so many times. The document would be half its size with this change alone.

A few rules could be changed for reading purposes. Such as you need a complete set of standard dice. You have the attributes: (list) assign one die to each without repetition. When a test is called for, roll the attribute die against the difficulty - 2 for easy, etc.

Its an interesting idea. Solo games are certainly worth recognition - and making it in only one page more so. However, if the text is hard to read at 121% magnification its not going to get the play it deserves.

There is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I seem to have lost sight of it some time ago.

I set it to 20

Somewhere along the way, it must have gotten shrunk down. I actually ended up with extra space (hence the hound pics) so I wasn't trying to cram that much in one space... thought I had room left over.

My only guess is that the font, which comes from a Mac, does not translate well. I will have to start trimming things... the Health/Wounds thing was redundant, but I liked how it worked... still, it will be the first to go. I also need to alter the font, obviously, and may need to get rid of the pics. I will work on this and re-submit the pdf soon, within hours hopefully.

Whoa!!

I had to switch to my Mac to read this without straining my eyes.

However, once I got past the hurdle of reading it and actually read it, I was quite impressed. Reminds me a lot of the good ole days of T&T booklets and FF. But with Hounds of Tindalos.

Never tire of your solo

Never tire of your solo rpgs, and you've not let us down yet! Absolutely as good as any of the much-beloved T&T solos. Agree that there's some redundancy (such as balancing health v. wounds instead of having 1 stat) but doesn't affect playability. Also agree that, however it came to pass, the font is so small as to be unpleasant; but there's no requirement that it be a "one-page-rpg" so I'm going to re-type it in larger font. Keep up the good work!!!

I've tried a better font

Not sure why that last font was so small and unreadable, but I've tried a more straightforward font now that should be much easier to read. Trash that other copy and try this new version... if it's still hard to read, I will have to try again.

Just before I came back to

Just before I came back to this page I'd re-typed the whole game in 12 size Times New Roman. Took only 2 1/2 pages. I made more space for the statistics (and used only the 1 statistic for Health instead of 2, as you're now doing) so you could put markers on the page to remember the type of die for each stat, amount of Health remaining, and which relics/spells you have. You've also answered my question as to what you meant about "ignore instructions to increase Health" if the wounds are from the Hound - that on subsequent turns after being bitten by the Hound, if you get an instruction that allows curing a wound you can't.
Which implies that, even if you are unable to make the two Difficult rolls to successfully use the Relic to win, the Hound only gets one bite then you go to the next turn?

Game is fun, and you picked a clever topic - good ol' fashioned pulp-horror-things-man-wasn't-meant-to-know. Wonder if it could be expanded? Right now it is purely luck if you get to take the tests in which you happen to have better stats. Maybe a way to make tests to either increase stats temporarily, or let you bump the D20 turn roll downward, or affect the die size in those contingencies where you're "lost" (in jail, dreamland, asylum)?

I have pondered expanding the system

By two successful Difficult rolls to beat the hound, do you mean the one roll to avoid being wounded by the Tindalos followed by the roll to use the Relic/Spell? That's how it should have been set up to be. If it came off as anything else, then I didn't explain it right.

As for expanding the system, I do like this basic idea of different dice being used in tests. I like the die used being the variable, whereas the target number remains constant. Originally, there was going to be only one type of test: the average test where the target number is always 4. Then I expanded the test concept, and I'm glad I did. I do want to flesh out this system more, but I'm not sure if I will expand Tindalos or just take the system and apply it to a new RPG.

I totally agree that this is another one of my games wherein there is a certain fatalism when it gets started. Initially, you can set your Attributes, but after that it is completely random what you encounter, with little choice by you beyond what the die rolls say. Unfortunately, this is kind of the nature of the beast when it comes to certain solo games. I'll have to ponder how to make a system less fatalistic and more about player choice... for the most part, I have been able to accomplish that type of freedom with my massive solo RPG here called 'Adventuria', but a lot of that has to do with the size of that RPG moreso than it's solo nature.

Anyway, you definitely gave me something to think about... it's just hard to say what this will all lead to. A lot of times, I'll get an idea to further expand a game or gaming concept, but then it either goes nowhere or it just takes a few weeks for me to figure out just what direction I should go. I'm currently feeling like I may be putting out a new batch of small solo games like this, some beyond the 1 page size. We will see... any suggestions for expanding this game/system here will be well received.
