It Lives!! - An entry for Errin's Hallowe'en 2007 Challenge

OK Lab Rats! I know I should have probably signed up on Errin's blog, but I am taking the opportunity now to post my entry for his Hallowe'en 2007 RPG Challenge. It is a simple one page narrative game of mad scientists attempting to create a monster to unleash on the world. It is also a One Page RPG, so it can go down for that challenge also.

I'm not sure whether It Lives!! meets the requirements for Errin's current challenge, but I'll leave that up to him. After all, it's his challenge.

However, as they say in the Monster Club: "To the greatest monster of all - Man!"

If fits

Nice work. I'll have to give more feedback later when i have gotten to test it out a little more. Looks great! Thanks for the entry for the Halloween Challenge.

Peace, Errin : )

Fantastic game!

Really clever game all in the space of one page. I think I would be Bela Lugosi from 'Bride Of The Monster' if I were to be a mad scientist in this game. The system is very simple and clear, and the overall game offers a very unique experience.

Even though the Halloween challenge was one of very few entries (mine is still lagging but due very soon), it was well worth it, as the games submitted have been quite novel and interesting.

Thanks again for doing this, John. I hope you enjoyed the challenge. It Lives! could definitely count as 1 page RPG for the 2007 Character Sheet Is The RPG challenge. Just let me know, and I will put it in the official list for the challenge.

If it's fine by you ...

... then put it in by all means, thank you.

Reminds me, I have to sort something out on 1km1kt. It seems there are two of us and it makes sorting by authors a bit difficult.

I blame my parents :)

Will do

My submission for the Halloween challenge will be a submission for the one page RPG challenge as well.

Cool

I like it

Hunger Rising

I'm not sure if I'd play the game as is. A good opening and a nice premise, but it seems really to just be a dice game of lots of contested rolls without much story/setting. (Admittedly, that can be said for a lot of games if you just look at the rules)

However, it has whetted my appetite to see more. It Lives could make for a really interesting board game. Searching rooms of an old castle/asylum (with a genetics laboratory added in the expansion pack...), the ability to set traps in certain rooms. Possibly a small deck of cards to be passed out at the start for some special abilities like finding a secret passage to warp around the map.

There is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I seem to have lost sight of it some time ago.

That's one way of looking at it

I do agree that the game involves a lot of dice rolling but, as you said, so do a lot of games. The role-playing comes in when you narrate the events around the rolling (I'm sure I mentioned that ...). And narrative is not something you can enforce in any game.

Of late, my partner and I have been getting into varius games like Dogs in the Vineyard, My Life With Master and Shab-al-Hiri Roach. Most of these games could be described as dice fests as well, but again it is the narration you provide that makes the difference. These games served as direct inspiration, as did the Indigo-level game in Extreme Paranoia (which I have yet to persuade anyone to play).

Thanks for the suggestion about the board game, though. I'll have to dig out my copy of Junta to see what I can rip off .. Inspire me! I meant inspire me! ;)

What's Extreme Paranoia?

I'm only familiar with the original Paranoia. I used to own Junta too, interestingly enough. Great game.

It's ...

Extreme Paranoia is a supplement for the current version of Paranoia as published by Mongoose. It covers what you can get up to at security clearances higher than Red, and doesn't concentrate on being Troubleshooters either.

Each level has its own twist on the game situation. Orange covers being vid-stars, Yellow covers being retail managers, Green is Disater Response Teams, Blue is HIL Sector, Indigo is R&D executives, Violet covers becoming Ultaviolet.

Some of the new stuff is comlete in itself as a game. For example, beign vid-stars, retail managers or R&D chief scientists are games you can probably play in an evening with different ways to backstab your firends.

I have found Extreme Paranoia useful to help flesh out my games but, as I said, I have yet to get anyone to abandon being Troubleshooters.
