One player game ideas

Ooook so heres the idea, I've been working on one player RPGs for a while and I'm pretty happy with the one I'm doing now. Its a 3 stat system with very simple rules that really only pertain to character classes, event/challenge rules and items allowing the player to make everything else up as he or she sees fit. Its really minimalist because I wanted something I could play when I was bored with out needing to think about it too much... so heres the basics...

all you need to play is a pencil, a D6 and some paper (I have a note book for this kinda thing and I would dare to guess a lot of you other game writers do to for your various projects)
no particular setting but I kinda imagine Final Fantasy6, Maple Story and Darkstalkers horrible bastard child, for my personal adventure at lest, but because of the simple rules it could be applied to any setting. I suppose i should get to the rules.

first off there are 3 stats.

Strength: used for attacks in combat and any challenges that involve strength.
Mind: used for magical attacks and any mental or logic challenges.
Talent: used for skills that wouldn't count as strength or mind challenges such as stealing or handling animals.

kinda generic so far huh? well get ready as we go from medium to extra medium!

each adventure involves a goal (such as finding a number of items or killing a number of some type of monster) and challenges along the way. once set upon an adventure you draw a table with a number of events (enemy battles, random treasure chest, traps or goal events) a normal chart would be drawn like this (I used this in the first adventure i played, a quest to find 5 missing cats)
1-2 level 1 enemy encounter
3-4 keep looking
5-6 you found a missing cat (make a talent challenge to grab it)

a more dangerous adventure table might look like this
1-2 level 1 enemy
3 level 2 enemy
4-5 trap (make a talent challenge or lose 10 points (I'll get to points right after this))
6 you find the bandit leader (level 3 enemy encounter (I'll get to the level enemy nonsense soon too))

as you explore the world of this game and finish adventures you earn points, points are used for everything, they mark your parties will to keep on going and the money you use to pay for items. when you defeat an enemy you earn points, when you complete an adventure you earn points, almost any time you win a challenge you earn points unless the adventure table says other wise. when a character fails any challenge you lose points. If all your characters are defeated in battle you lose all the points you had earned for that adventure so far. If you lose all your points its game over!

combat (this is where that enemy levels thing I mentioned comes in!). In the first phase of combat you choose which party member will fight and how, you may choose physical attacks (strength) magical attacks (mind) or special attacks (talent). but an attack may only be used if the character has an item/skill based on the attack (a weapon for physical, a spell for magic or a special attack for talent). once the attack has been determined roll 1d6 for the enemies attack level, if the characters chosen attack stat is higher than the d6 roll the monster is slain and the player earns 5 points, if the stat is lower the player loses 5 points, if it is the same roll again until a the character or monster is defeated. If a character is defeated they cannot fight for the rest of the battle but are back to normal once the battle ends. some times events will have the characters battling more than one enemy. in these cases the player determines which enemy they wish to battle then set upon the battle as normal. some enemies are stronger. an enemies level determines how many times they must be defeated before they stay down.

a demo battle would go like this
Player: chooses Chai the wolfboy to attack with his short sword! (Chai has 4 for his strength) *player rolls 1d3* the monster is defeated and the player earns 5 points.

or alternatively
Player chooses Haruha the witch to attack with a fire ball spell! (Haruha has 5 for her mind) *player rolls 1d6* Haruha is defeated and the player loses 5 points.

for a more epic battle against a level 2 monster.
Player: choses Terra the swam monster to attack with acid barf! (Terra has 4 talent) *player rolls 1d3* the level 2 monster is defeated but has one level left!
player: choose Chai the wolf boy to attack with dancing leaves spell (chai has a 3 mind stat) *player rolls 1d4* chai is defeated and cannot continue battling!
Player: choses Haruha the witch to attack with fireball spell! (again Haruha has a 5 for mind) *player rolls 1d2* the monster is defeated and the player earns 5 points for each level!

a character may only be used once consecutively unless they are the only character remaining.

non combat challenges are made the same way as combat challenges, the player chooses which character will take the challenge then rolls 1d6. If the characters stat that associates with the challenge is higher than the roll the challenge is a success and the player earns a number of points. if it is lower the challenge is a failure and the player loses points, some challenges (such as traps) also prevent characters from taking part in what ever the next event might be.

weapons, spells and skills exist mostly so that the player can attack, items can give the player bonuses in challenges such power gauntlets boosting a characters strength in combat or other challenges that involve the strength stat. the medical kit item can be used once to bring back a party member who had been defeated while in a combat event, this can be helpful in battles against more than one enemy or enemies with higher levels. some skills can be used to get bonuses on talent challenges.

as far as I can recall thats about it... feel free to make the rest up for yourself but heres a few demo characters.

Chai the wolf boy: strength 4 mind 3 talent 3, weapon: short sword. magic: dancing leaves. skills: none

Haruha the witch: strength 3 mind 5 talent 4, weapon: bone knife, Magic: fire ball, skill: here kitty kitty (+1 on talent challenges involving cats)

Terra the swamp monster strength 4 mind 4 talent 3, Weapons: none, Magic: gravity, Talent: acid barf

if any one has an idea how to use this game to make a one player war game contact me...

hmm

not quite dead yet, i checked out that other game and it seemed a lot like a version of the game i worked on with location that determined missions and events and stuff. i dropped it because i just didn't feel up to making events for every area. i do want to ad character levels but if its just a d6 based game it would need to start off horribly unfair against the character and quickly make it near impossible to lose.

meh what the heck I'm longer for this world than i hopped.
more characters!

Sargon the sorcerer of oh-my-gawd-my-face-you're-stabbing-me-in-the-face Strength 4 mind 5 talent 4 weapon: dagger of face-stabbing magic: "who needs magic when you can stab people in the face!" skill: knife throw (aimed at the face no doubt!)

Roxy the riot grrl (I'm a little more into woman's punk rock than i think i should be) strength 4 mind 4 talent 5 weapon: guitar magic: none skill: rock out (if there is more than one enemy they fight, one is defeated and the second is -1 on all combat rolls until the end of the battle).

ok thats about it i suppose... i think I'll be up the rest of the night drawing that blasted yeti though

peace

gah

i just realized i miss used the 1d6 terms... I've been kinda out of it and on a lot of espresso so my mind isn't working quite the way i want it to (I've spent the last half a day trying to draw an imp in underwear to test a new drawing style and it seems to me as a testament to just how out of it I've made myself). Again i apologize for the miss use of the term, I do hope anyone who read it got what I was trying to say... I'm not too sure what i was thinking (actually what i was thinking is "gawd i love espresso")

some more demo characters while I'm here

Plum Jam the Imp: strength 3 mind 4 talent 4 weapon: bone knife, magic: fire ball Skill: poison tail (target enemies next roll is -2 untill it is defeated)

Tip the cat boy: strength 4 mind 3 talent 5, weapon: claws, magic: none Skill: dance (+1 on entertainment challenges)

James Faust the animist (now you too can live the life of a wanna be game writer/imp pin-up artist) strength 4 mind 4 talent 3 (lets be realistic now, I'm sure it should be less than that) weapon: ritual sword (+1 mind on when attacking with magic), magic: bolt talent: epically boring games (in talent challenges James Faust can automatically pass by making the target of the challenge bored out of its mind)

thats all

Expansion.

Have you thought about an extended single player story. You could create a fantastic setting and multi-linear plot (because you can't make a non-linear plot whilst predicting all routes.)

If you haven't had a look at Errinf's huge online single player rpg Adventuria

It's a prime example of dedication and a good idea. With a simple single player D6 system like you have, have you ever thought of creating a single player story?

Don't steal... The Government hates competition.

caffeine is a crappy substitute for talent

I have a story I've been playing through myself about a boy trying to take over the world but i have not really considered putting together something for others to play, i had seen Adventuria but I wanted to wait till i got back to my main comp before I got too into anything.

as for what Evil1 said... yea it is kind of a die rolling contest but like I said I really just wanted something simple that I didn't need to think about too much. i love a lot of weird races and as long as i keep it simple i can have pretty much anything i want (yeti sounds like a fun idea) later i might adopt the idea of swapping out party members as a kind of event.

thanks for the feed back but I'm crashing so i think I'll call it a night... also (in a last burst of espresso inspiration (with equal thanks to Evil1))

Crunch the yeti: strength 5 mind 2 talent 3. weapon: spiky club, magic: none skill: snow ball

Races

the races reminded me of Mordor 2, the roguelike game. you could be a yeti, saris, elf, all sorts of things.

Sounds really neat there. personally it sounds a bit like dice rolling contest.
