Chapter 3 Combat

Experienced GMs will know how rapidly players can get themselves into fights, even when the odds are completely against them. This section explains how to reslove combats.

3.1 The Round

Combat takes place in rounds, where characters take it in turns to hit each other (or do something else). Everybody's turn is imagined to take place at the same time, in a five second period called a round. After everybody has acted, the next round begins, and everyone gets another go at hitting each other for the next five second period.

This is the traditional way combats happen in RPGs, and is the best for when there are more than 3 players since it gives everything structure and minimises confusion. With less than 3 players however, the GM may decide they want to use aa more fluid or freeform way of resolving combats, whith players acting them out, graphically describing their actions or even fighting in a computer game to resolve who wins the fight.

3.1.1 Initiative - Who goes first?

All the players should roll a d20 and add the result to their speed stat (the GM should do the same for any NPCs or monsters). This is their initiative score. The player with the highest initiative score goes first, followed by the second highest, until the person with the lowest initiative goes last and a new round begins again with the first player. You don't need to roll initiative more than once per fight.

3.2 Attacks

The most common thing characters will do in combat is attack, usually with a weapon. First the player must determine whether or not they hit their target, by rolling under their finesse stat.If they miss, the attack ends there. If they hit, their opponent may try to dodge(speed), block(speed, requires a shield) or parry(finesse, requires a weapon which can parry). If the opponent successfully avoids the attack then it ends. If not, the opponent is hit and the attacker needs to roll damage, as described in their weapon's profile. This shows how much it hurts the opponent.

Most characters can attack twice in a turn, each attack taking 2.5 seconds. However some chracters may be exceptionally fast and get 3 attacks per turn, while others may be slower or using an unwieldy weapon and get only one.
