A Look into Magic

Magic is the term always applied to technology a people don't understand. In truth the magic of my world is the manipulation of the matter and elements around a person. As such a spell is only as effective as the place you are. A spray of ice shards isn't going to be very effective in the middle of a desert as a fireball wouldn't be as dangerous in the frozen tundra. As such those that choose to use "magic" tend to learn how to manipulate the environment around them. For some this mind set leads to tunnel vision of what they are capable of doing.

In truth all beings are capable of using magic in all forms. The ability to manipulate the energy around one's self is only limited by the thought patterns of the practitioner. A simple farmer could conceivable create living constructs to harvest his crops if he but knew how to manipulate the environment around him. As such even practitioners can use the same thought patterns of how they manipulated fire or earth and use it upon ice.

Magic has been categorized by scholars throughout the ages and this is the general consensus on the division of magic.

Fire
Fire magic is common to the hotter regions of the world where the extreme heat can be easily manipulated. Fire magic is most dangerous for young practitioners because it can easily become blazing inferno.

Earth
The Earth domain is common throughout the world though it is sometimes not as effective in places where Earth lays close buried under water and ice.

Water
Manipulation of water.

Wind
Manipulation of wind.

Spirit
Manipulation of the energies of life forces and potential life force around one's self. This is a dangerous domain for practitioners. One might be able to create a construct from the life energy around it or one might be tempted to bind a soul to its body.

The difference of the two is that the binding of the energy about the practitioner comes from the all living things about it. Plants, animals, and other small and obscure creatures life forces can be bound together to create a higher sentient creature. Some view this as acceptable and others find this something to abhor.

The binding of a persons soul can be used to create servants from those who have died or are dying thus preventing them from proceeding to the afterworld.

Magic from one domain tends to be mixed with others to create spells. One example would be a fireball. To create a fireball a practitioner heats up the air as he gathers earth into a ball. Once the ball of earth is heated it bursts into flames and is thrown at the target by a force of wind. Basic practitioners don't always understand what they are doing when they create this effect or other similar effects. They are able to see the threads and through concentration bind them together. True masters of the art are able to create this effects and more and maintain them for hours if not forever. They find ways to tie the power into loops that constantly build upon each other.
