So I finally read The Postman and then the Author, David Brin's view on the movie which he love and I agree it kept a lot of the core idea and didn't really lose anything in the telling. But this isn't what the blog is about. In fact I have been obsessed with Post-Apoc since I played Fallout as a kid and read a book thats name I can't remember... Just know it had a iguana with wings on the cover in a desert and had Satanists, Mexicans, American Indians, and Big Foot all wrapped up into one. Since then I have explored steampunk and cyberpunk as well as the standard Science fiction and fantasy that we all know and love. Yeah I know kind of a vague memory of a book but hey it was like 15 years ago.
Anyways so I have found that I really like post-apocalaptic worlds and a few years ago stuck in some country performing some job for the military I was bored one evening and I was walking around and I built my little fantasy/scifi/post-apoc world. I have occassionally put some of it down on paper but for the most part it has resided in my head for years brought up when ever I watch or read or play something to do with the world being devastated. So now I am going to post out what happened to the world as far as the people know and what is going on with it now. I am probably going to be a horrible writter for it sort of switching writing styles depending on the part of it. Though I have a passion for writing I have not practiced it enough to make it flow properly yet. So enjoy and if you use the little bits in here throw me some credits and maybe even a link so I can see how it was used.

A thirty years ago the world wasn't like this. It was once a function and thriving place where people only had to walk down the street to get a meal. They didn't have to fight for every scrap of food or the chance of getting a meal. It was safe to go to sleep in your home at night. You ddin't have to keep a gun in your hand just to sleep well.
It was a different world then. Now its all gone to shit. As with most people there hasn't been a consensus on how it happened my grandfather while he still had breath in his body used to tell me that their was a great plague released by the damned commy sons-a-bitching Chinese whores. My father would scoff at this belief and tell me that it was an asteroid that contained a virus that ravaged through Asia and spread to the rest of the world rapidly.
In the end it wasn't the only thing that killed civilization. Some rogue countries with nukes decided to try and keep the virus away from them and began dropping the bombs on neighboring countries suffering from the plague. What the morons didn't take into account is the fact that the virus possibly came from an asteroid strike and as such survived the heat of entering our atmosphere. All they did was ensure that a harder strain continued in existence and made its global trip using Mother Nature herself. Granted there were ways to protect yourself and well hell most of the people that could afford it did. They holed up in underground bunkers and secure living conditions. You could even use a gas mask and be safe as long as you scrubbed down before removing it.
The virus ran its course and the world was tortured. We suffered a few years of poor light from the nukes people were setting of, several hit the United States including three on Washington, D.C. Fired from some nations that even in their death throws wanted to try and punish the Americans for whatever ideology we violated. The President and most of the government survived because they were already relocated to Cheyenne Mountain's bunker system.
The world might not be as bad as some predicted but it isn't good either. Optimistic estimate is that the virus killed 80% of the people it infected with 8% of the total population having been able to save itself from infection all together. Those that survived well there is a lot that went wrong with them. One of the first things is sterility, not all of them are but of those that made a "full" recover they were left sterile. Those that made a recover suffered various issues. Some were insane or mental impaired from the virus other were physically changed. A more primative state than they had once been and far more savage.
Though there is something a government left of the United States many other parts of the country broke away because of the severe cuts to the communications networks. With devastated populations more and more people had to return to the fields to survive. More and more places lost external connections and some places were giving up on technology altogether. It amounted to a period of chaos and in the end the maps have been redrawn.

Republic of Texas - Consisting of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma it is the largest of the new nations and remains on friendly terms with the old United States government. Much of the territory has reverted back to ranchers owning large tracts of land and there people working for them but with a few newer rules. There is no slavery, to be a rancher is a challenge in providing for the people fairly and making sure their needs are met. Breaking the rules brings the wrath of the Texas Rangers, both now a military and police organization. Controlling some of the vital oil fields makes Texas maintain something a technology level. Though most communication is restricted to radio communication and in some places telephone connections most of the mainframe computers are now offline and gathering dust in the large technology districts.
There are several things that are new to the world since plague. Well not new just not published about until now.
Elves - Non-mythical creatures. A genetic alteration to the human genome. They were made to be super soldiers, quicker reflexs, sharper senses. They were human babies changed before even being fertilized. The government raised grew several hundred as an evolving experiment. The only visible difference between Elves and Humans is that Elves were given a deliberate pointing of the ears and that they all tend to be around six foot six to seven feet tall. Most communities now number a few of these Elves though there are plenty that are supremacist and/or separatists and tend to either live avoiding or in conflict with humans.
