One Page RPG: Tales of Adventure

Well, a couple of months back I was toying with ideas for creating solo RPG's. I was rather proud of a card based exploration system yet I never got around to testing it.

While sitting in a hotel room after driving for 12 hours I decided that ErrinF's Character Sheet event would be an excellent way to test the system.

So, arm yourself with your 8-sided die and a deck of cards and embark on your own epic tale.

I really enjoyed this game,

I really enjoyed this game, I always had trouble coming up with exploration and randomizing battles but it's done really well in this game. As for the issue of monsters not having health I just played it by having the out come of the die roll determine if he monster was defeated but I could see how others would want more challenge then one round of combat determining victory. I had tried mixing it with part of one of my own battle systems for a multi-character parties, and I'd enjoy using your card system to write my own adventures if you don't mind.

Go for it

I'm glad you like it and I'd love to see what you can do with the system.

in the process

so I'm using your system to play a version of my suburban warfare game about gnomes. I tweaked the battle system a bit to use multiple characters and made the objectives finding 6 lawn gnomes and I had a giant feral cat as a legendary enemy. I think if there were more stats there could be different challenges other than just traps but I think you could just say "skill" covers everything you might need to do.

one of the main things I like though is that the term "combat" is vague enough to say it could count as magic as well as swording things to death. But if I was to do a traditional dungeon crawl I would add "spells" which would have uses such as re-rolling failed rolls and healing damage, the character could use his/her "spells" for any of their uses but they would be limited to a certain number of times per adventure (unless maybe you find a magic potion or a spring or an alter or something).

As simple as this game is it has a lot of fun to it (though I've been playing with my own chart and using a D20 and a D8) I've had a lot of success playing and this game is very well done even without my suggestions.

I'd really like to see you make more adventures and as soon as I can I'll post my adventure

La Petite Sorcière

OK I've finished 2 adventures using this game and both of them seem to work. I did the first adventure based off of my Suburban warfare game and the second based on an EGL witch character in the vain of Sugar Sugar Rune (I feel so sick about myself admitting to reading that but meh such is life). I posted the suburban warfare game already and I want to see some reactions before I post the other which I have titled "La Petite Sorcière". Really feel if I got some good espresso I could stay up all night writing these things and I just may n.n! Maybe a few that are more compatible with your original like dungeon crawls or quest for something.

Thanks for this excellent one page rpg!

Very well done, NoobHealer. I really like how this game creates it's own setting complete with it's own unique feel. I particularly like the dungeon exploration system which always varies in one way or another, making for a lot of different possibilities. There is also plenty of room to expand this into other adventures that can be played using the system and a new chart for what each card represents.

I did have a few questions about this game, though, as I was unclear on a few different aspects of it.

For one, when it comes to customized class, does that mean you start with warrior or rogue then spend the points adding to their base values, or does it mean you customize a whole new class from the ground up and spend the 8 points on the new customized class?

For two, what is the health value of the monsters? I only see threat values for each monster. Is health equal to threat, and you decrease threat as you defeat a monster until it reaches 0? Or is health something else entirely seperate from threat?

For three, when sneaking from a monster, if it is a monster with an odd threat value, do you round up or down to determine what half of it's threat value is?

I also wanted to suggest you include the pdf file that the game uses a d8. You put that into the blog here, but I couldn't find it in the actual pdf.

Thanks for taking part in this year character sheet rpg challenge. Tales Of Adventure is a most excellent entry.

Peace, Errin : )

I'm glad you like it.

I was rather proud of the exploration system. I hoped that it would build a system that would be flexible enough for multiple games, but also focused enough that you felt like you were actually engaged in a single quest.

As for the creation, It was intended to create your own class from the ground up.

The health values... um... Lets pretend that I hadn't overlooked an important piece missing from the chart.

And escaping from an enemy, rounding never crossed my mind. I've decided that rounding down would be a better choice. I'm figuring that if a player is avoiding the monsters he's probably in no shape to fight.

Everything should be updated in the PDF now. Thanks for the pointers, it would have been quite a while before I even noticed.

Anyways, I really don't know how you can do these one page games. Every time I try I find myself cringing as I try to make room for everything that know I'm forgetting. I really am impressed, because these things aren't easy.

Thanks for the fixes!

The game looks better than ever. Glad to help.

And thanks for the compliment! I get a kick out of making these small RPGs, so it's always been somewhat easy and fun for me to make them.

Good job!

Interesting, the game looks pretty good so far. Not too many materials needed to play, a fairly simple. :)
