Dice Resolution 2 | Poker Dice
Forewords
Poker Dice are regular D6's with card on its face, which are: Ace of Spades, King of Diamonds, Queen of Hearts (sometimes colored blue), Jack of Clubs, Ten of Diamonds and Nine of Spades.
Although this dice mechanics uses poker dice, it don't use poker hands. This mechanics was conceived to avoid adding or subtracting numbers during the game, and to create a more visual resolution method.
Mechanics
The die is divided in three groups: Ace, Royals (King, Queen and Jack) and Numbers (Ten and Nine), being Aces better then Royals and those better then Numbers. Those groups will be combined between themselves to create levels of success and defeat.
The base roll is made with two dice, this is the average roll, and is read as following:
- Two Aces: Extreme Success;
- Ace & Royal: Complete Success;
- Two Royals: Simple Success;
- Ace & Number: Draw, in fact a success and a defeat;
- Royal & Number: Simple Defeat;
- Two Numbers: Complete Defeat;
This roll can be modified by bonus dice and penalty dice. Bonuses and penalties cancels each other, and the maximum bonus or penalty is 3.
- To roll with bonus dice, roll the two base dice plus one die for each bonus. After the roll, choose the two best dice and read the result as in the table above.
- To roll with penalty dice, roll the two base dice plus one die for each penalty. After the roll, choose the two worst dice and read the result as in the table above.
Each bonus or penalty will chance dramatically the chances against or in favor of the player, use them moderatedly.
Applying
In the character creation, the PC was created and assigned levels for their Concepts and/or Traits, ranging from 0(untrained) to 2(pro). As a matter of convention, we'll consider that level 1(trained) is the average level. This is particularly true because most of the things the PCs will do will be done in trained level, i.e., we tend to do things with the knowledge we have.
This said, the table below show the relation between level and dice:
- Level 0 (untrained): 1 penalty die;
- Level 1 (trained): neither penalty nor bonus;
- Level 2 (pro): 1 bonus die;
GM can make things easier or harder giving penalty or bonus dice.
(more to come...)
The mechanics I'll propose
The mechanics I'll propose don't use poker hands, its simpler. Its only a way not to use numbers. Only for fun!
Ah I see, like in Hero Quest
Ah I see, like in Hero Quest this image = success this image = fail? ah i'll just wait and see.

Reconizing that these are
Reconizing that these are either place holders for something that will be expanded upon, quick one shot ideas in order to get some feedback or waiting to decide between the two systems, I'm not gunna bog this down with too much crud.
Poker dice systems are great if everyone has used them before, but if not figuring out what you've just rolled and then trying to compare it to what you need to get is difficult if your not used to it.
Second they can be limiting. Poker dice 'hands' only go so high, but then again I suppose a D6 vs TN can only go as high as 6.
For quick and easy I would go for multiple D6 vs TN. If things need to get more complex, make multiple successes mean something, or in the case of some rolls required. (Just thinking about combat, perhaps your defense is the number of successes required to hit rather than setting the TN which for ease could just be 4 all the time.)
Of course you might be thinking single D6 + class rating (if your still going with that idea) vs TN which would allow for more development as it removes the cap on the TN.
Wow, maybe I did waffle a bit.
