Resident Evil RPG (Project Closed till further notice)

The lab has been a bit slow as of late. However, I do think there is some quality to back up that intrest. Creating a literary work in the 2nd person voice isn't an easy undertaking.

Given how its set up, giving each segment its own page makes sense, but it would seem to me format might benefit from numbered paragraphs and double column layout to keep things clean. Perhaps either playing with the margins or the creation of three columns would allow a player to have the story, illustration/choices, and space for tracking combat & characters all on one page.

While we are a mostly amateur community, there is one point in the book that I would argue is unprofessional. Ettiquite around fan groups seems to disprove of fanfic characters having sex with those in the established cannon - so the dating Rebbecca seems a little out of place. (and more so in a 2nd person work) The implications and special reward for male characters seems either immature, or perhaps a bit "squicky" for some. From a purely game point, it also seems a bit unfair. (+30 points) I'm also pretty sure its out of character for Mrs. Chambers as well.

Do excuse me for paying so much attention to one little aspect. Much of the book is very good, which makes the poor parts stand out all the more. My only other real complaint is that you could use a bit more detail. Not every reader is going to be perfectly familiar with every RE game, and more descriptions of the environment can really add to the dark atmosphere. Even a few lines mentioning flickering lights and shadows in the STARS briefing room, or seeing fellow officers in disheveled uniforms and distracted adds to the foreboding spirit.

It was a hybrid chose your adventure/dice combat book that got me into role playing in the first place. (Car Wars: Green Circle Blues to be specific) I'm always glad to see people making new ones. Good luck with the project.

Before starting, I'm one of those "Fan groups" that chainsaw mentioned. I own all the games, toys, and even the books. I even undertook the project of attempting to write a gamebook for the series.

I know that you are a fan of the series. You know that the games are about people surviving against overwhelming terror. That's why it spawned the genre "Survival Horror"

There was two reasons that the sex with Rebecca was a negative for me. The first is that you turned my sweet innocent Rebecca that I know and love into a whore... and that is against what Capcom told me.

The second more important reason is that there is far more important things to be worried about at this point in the story. As the Resident evil books show, this is a great time to build up the fear. I mean, THERE IS A CLAN OF CANABALISTIC KILLERS EATING PEOPLE NEAR TOWN!!! There is an amazing amount of information to unnerve the player and prepare him to live in a horror novel. That should be your first goal; This isn't the next Resident Evil Hollywood letdown; This is the next Epic Resident Evil Game.

The one other issue with the tone is in the games Console RPG style. By having such a heavily reliance of direct combat you lose the Horror aspect of the game. The player should be worried about going into combat with the monsters. The original RE game did a great job by limiting your ammunition. This forced me to navigate around zombies to stay alive. It would be nice to have more options to avoid direct confrontation by using my head.

There also a few issues with the rules. The first is that you had to repeatedly switch between files to get enemy stats. The problem with this is that every time I do this I lose my immersion. I'm reminded that its a game. It would be easier to stay focused if the enemy stats were shown in the combat passage.

The final question is where do stats come in? From what I read in the rules you roll the dice and 6+ you hit. How does the 12 attack that I have help me?

Oh and a word of advice, never speak negative of people who try to help you. Even if you say no offense, it makes you look like ungrateful. No offense.

and im thinking about removing the whole attack thing-not worth it, but i think adding a level cap will help...
one last thing-you are right about survival horror-if you can help me on how to take out dice rolling from fighting zombies and make it a bigger choice.
as for the Bestiary, i suggest opening it in a different tab
it makes it that much easier

As for how to make it more of a survival horror... I've got no idea. Everything I say following this is my current thoughts, untested and unproven. Maybe it can help you figure out the right path.

The level cap should definitely help to keep the player's on their toes. It will prevent the players from going all Dead Rising and slaughtering thousands of zombies with a stick of chewing gum. It is without a doubt a step in the right direction.

If you wanted to keep experience and growth you could also use the idea from the old Lone Wolf books. Your character will get stronger after every successful mission. It made the focus on surviving rather than killing for to get stronger.

As for the horror part, I have yet to figure it out. The advice I was given was to read as many horror novels as possible. A good horror novel scaring the crap out of you without showing you a thing.

The shadows need to slowly creep across the floor. The dead silence is only broken by the thumping of your heart. You grip your gun knowing that it is all that stands between you and death. 'What the hell was that thing?' you think to yourself. 'It should have died, but...' as the truth hits you. "Please Rachel," you whisper to yourself, "Stay alive. I'm coming for you." Suddenly, you hear a crash behind you and you spin to face the unknown horrors that await you in this hellhole.

I believe that if you can combine your combat with a darker atmosphere you can give create fear.

I have one final thought on combat. Go to a site called "Home of the Underdogs" and look under their game book section. "Eternal Champions" and "Way of the Tiger" created combat systems that combine many sections of the book and dice rolls to create a detailed fight. It may be effective to detail actions even in combat, because a zombie biting through your flesh can be more unnerving than rolling under a six.

Anyways, that is my random ranting. Now, I'll good luck to you and I hope you can succeed where I have failed.

I forgot to upload the combat system, so i see what your saying. Ill make the font size smaller-i just wanted it to be readable is all. I dont indent my Paragraphs because i save in dents for conversation. Sorry but the talk talk talk is the intro to the story.

As for the 2nd player
You use them for battle mostly, they dont make chices-its a team effort. They get the weapons you get and you can trade off ammo and weapons with them. The only thing that they DONT get are same gear sets. Everyone has to pick a different one.

Sometimes the only way to know if something can look better is if somebody else tells you. For this reason i try to have friends go through my project atleast weekly to check for any glaring issues.
