Random Encounter Charts

|

Remember when RPGs had random encounter charts?

Everyone please post your favorite.

I want to write a sci-fi RPG that has random encounter charts but instead of the PCs encountering like 2d6 pilgrims armed with knives, they encounter a story, like 2d6 stranded pilgrims having trouble with their space ship (and incidentally with their vows) offer star charts to locations the PCs haven't visited yet, in exchange for their help fixing their ship.

A whole RPG based on random

A whole RPG based on random encounters. That would be fun. Maybe create some cards and have them in different stacks. Label them something like "Combat", "Diplomacy", "Weird", and/or "Heroic".

When its your turn, you choose one card from the stack and the party has to RP the scenario. That's awesome!! I think you might wanna go with this.

I was thinking along the same lines

I've been looking at the encounter charts for Jorune, the random space opera adventure generator in Modern Dispatch, and the oracles in In A Wicked Age, and thought maybe I can deal an encounter.

I'd used different terms but basically it amounted to the same things.

clubs = space pirates
hearts = distress calls
diamonds = opportunities
spades = anomalies

I'll know I'm done when I have a system that can generate Trouble with Tribbles. I would need to deal saboteur, dangerous life form, shifty trader, aggressive aliens, etc.

don't have a copy but

Take a look (if you hadn't already) at the fan made Fallout pnp, one of their source books has a great encounter chart (especially if you've played the PC games) with things like encountering death, the old man at the bridge (perhap in a sci fi setting a demented star ship commander who has parked his vessel in front of a worm hole or like) and groups of slavers hunting down slaves.

I like the idea of having random encounters in a game that could lead to potential full blown stories.
