Monsters for Legion

Hey, lab, I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I need help with monsters and beasties for my RPG, Legion: Hell on Earth. But I need more enemies for my PCs to fight. I mean, I've got demons, but they should really be more like boss-type enemies, the big, bad demons anyways.

But I don't want to fall into the "orc" problem, where all my players ever fight are "grunt"-type demons. I've got werewolves and vampires, and Hell-allied humans, but I certainly need more. Any suggestions would be great.

Different Cultures

Have a look at other religions and myths from around the world. You could adapt Japanese oni, kami or tengu as demons. Or, how about Hindu gods translated into demonic adversaries.

Another option, look at old fashioned monsters and urban myths. Maybe big foot was a type of demon who escaped hell. Other possibilities are the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil or even the obscure Red Caps.

Hope that helps!

Folk Monsters

IMO, bringing in fairies, Hindu gods, Japanese Gods, etc. would clutter up the game. For example, Lakshmi, the godess of wealth is widely accepted as a good deity, even by Christians, even though it says in the Bible that it is easier to fit a camel through the eye of a needle than it is for a wealthy man to enter Heaven. Shiva, the god of yoga and asceticism is almost always depicted as evil in western fantasy because he is the god that destroys the world at the end of the Kaliyuga. His alignment in the first Deities and Demigods was chaotic evil. We need to drastically change this game if we bring in a god of celibacy and make him evil.

But I really like the idea of bringing folk monsters into this game, like the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, or even el Chupacabra, etc. Incidentally, Vampires and Werewolves are folk monsters. They have nothing to do with Christianity and almost nothing to do with the earlier religions of Europe. So Bigfoot, yetis, and other cryptids fit right in with what's already in the game. Tengu are also folk monsters. They have nothing to do with Buddhism and almost nothing to do with Shintoism. And Japan is apparently filthy with folk monsters that turn into animals or animals that are secretly magical, crows and kites (which are tengu), foxes, badgers, snakes, etc. Maybe cryptids could be a whole class of creatures in the game.

Demon themes

I think we should brainstorm about demon themes. For example, chaos could have been boring in Warhammer 40K, but because there are different chaos gods, like for murder, sex, disease, etc. its kind of cool.

Basic demon themes could be the 7 deadly sins:

  1. Wrath - hunter / killers
  2. Sloth - creeping blobs
  3. Envy - covered in chains and barbs
  4. Gluttony - cannibal predators
  5. Greed - golden robot demons
  6. Pride - demon princes
  7. Lust - demon courtesans

Instead, or on top of that you could have demons of the four humours: blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm, or demons for each season, winter - ice demons, wendigos, etc., spring - seductresses, summer - afrit, demons of fire and sand (afur = Arabic for dust), autumn - vampires, liches, undead.

Incidentally, if you're going to make demons more interesting by giving them all sorts of variety, you should probably have different choirs or orders or castes of angels.

you could mix it up i

you could mix it up
i mean:an idea would be making hell-allied humans that when night falls become vampires and werewolves
but if you want here is a list of all the "hellish" creatures:
Zombies (never too much, and easy to kill)
Gargoyles
Giant spiders (soooo charming especially when black)
Swamp ghosts
Archdemons
Grotesque (The Grotesque, also called the Corpulent, is an undead construct monster, who can take a lot of hits, and when dead, explodes into a sea of worm-monsters called Lamprey that resided inside the Grotesque,if you ever played diablo you'll know what i mean)
Bloodravens horrible red daemonic looking ravens that's...uh...creepy
____________________________________________________________
for daemons i propose you more variety do not use only standard red, horned beasts., use ravenlords (love them!),serpents etc.
